Have you replaced your pancake TV antenna?

The pancake-style TV antenna in our 2016 unit gets really terrible reception. Have you replaced yours? With what? Did it improve reception significantly?

This question relates to the newer units that have the omni antenna; not the antennas you crank up and then turn manually.

I replaced my factory antenna with a king jack. Works great and tripled the number of stations.

Here is a thread on the topic:

Not to thread jack - but mine often works better on the rear TV than the front TV. Which is odd, since they are the same model TV and only about 5' apart...

Loose coax connection either at the rear TV, Rear wall outlet or coax bridge (my bridge is under the dinette).

I purchased a Wineguard automatic but have not installed it yet. They were on sale at Camping World. It was under $300.

Replaced stock pancake antenna with Winegard Razar Z1 (what the Winegard repr at the last summer's WVA AS rally recommended), at a little over $100 --- works much better --- far more stations received.

So the king jack is directional and requires the control panel inside - and I assume that means a through roof install.

What about good solutions for drop in replacement of the Omni?

As mentioned in a previous post, the LED lights in the ceiling can interfere with reception. My radio won't work right unless I turn some of the LEDs off.

Mine works OK but when I do get channels, about half of them are some form of celebrity worship shows. So I use the DVD instead.

Have you replaced your pancake TV antenna?

Extremely unhappy with the factory installed omni directional antenna. It doesn't help that the antenna sets lower than the AC unit which means than as much as 45% of the antenna is potentially blocked from receiving signals. I talked to Winguard techs and they suggested that I raise the antenna up. I asked if they offered a taller mast, of course they don't! Also asked about installing the auto aiming unit and they said I'd still have the same problem. AS tech told me that the antenna is installed per Winguards direction. Wife is very irritated and I think I'll get her on the phone with AS tech support. Disappointing that we pay premium price and get crap like this.

I replaced this POS Antenna with the Winegard Automatic. I also moved it away from the AC unit for better reception. I did 2 things: 1) added Solar L Bracket feet to raise additional 1.5 inches off of roof. That way, I could tuck cable under the Antenna housing when moving Antenna back a little further. 2) used the supplied plastic plate to cover up existing hole so I could stretch the cable back further. Both methods used so I could get about 18 inches away from any obstacles (including AC Unit) on the roof. It worked great! Getting great reception. Try not to get frustrated. Just think it though. There is enough cable slack through the existing hole for a better placement of the Automatic Antenna. I also used 3M VHB tape (for under the feet) and Sikaflex 221 to apply over the feet to prevent drilling any more holes in the roof. The Antenna is VERY light and wanted the option later on to upgrade Antenna when technology improves. Good Luck.

TV Antenna

Just got home from Casa Grande, AZ. Winter IBT meetings. Parked at fairgrounds near metal buildings. Zero TV reception (air). I thought it was the TV. This is a new 2017 with useless antenna. I phoned dealer in Tucson, AZ and spoke with technician. He thought it was a cable problem and suggested I bring it in for service. Service booked until February. I headed for home (Las Vegas, NV). We stopped in Laughlin, NV overnight. I tried one more time to check the TV reception. It works just fine. It turns out that the reception was just terrible at Casa Grande. The older Airstreams with a good antenna were getting marginal reception at best.
I think Airstream should do a recall and install a quality TV antenna.
