FTA Satellite

I might be interested in some type of satellite reception when weather is not great for being outside.

Has anyone any input on "Free To Air" Satellite? Comments, resources?

My other option is to a pay monthly fee for something I would seldom use.

I have done a bit of research this AM and this is a list of current open channels.

Not sure there is anything of much interest to me here. Comments?

One has to have nothing to do ( or can't sleep) to watch some of this stuff.

Probably due to living under a rock I never heard of FTA. After reading your post I googled it and checked out the channel list. I think I'll go back under the rock. Sal.

Hi Dave,
What do you do for TV at home? We have Direct TV. If we want something like that when we are on a trip, we just take our receiver from home and a portable dish with us.

I an wondering how you receive the FTA signals. Obviously you need a receiver and a dish of some kind. Did you find any reference that talked about that?

I have a FTA receiver somewhere. I haven't had it hooked up in a long time.

Almost nothing I wanted to watch. No wait, not almost nothing, nothing.

Very rarely when I updated the firmware I would catch a movie that the encryption key was in the update, but that lasted only a few days. Then it was back to Lithuanian soccer or something less interesting.

There are groups of people that find FTA satellite an interesting hobby. They devote lots of time to cracking the encryption used by subscription services and sharing the updates. This process usually involves having a Windows computer to manage and install the updates. And lots of time and hassle.

You may enjoy it, I don't. I've tried it.

We have a land tether system at home for the last 12yrs that works great.
I have not gone back to the satellite system as we do experience heavy weather at times and the satellite reception is compromised when that happens.

Our provider "SHAW" is just introducing a new satellite service that I believe is good North America wide. (I would have to confirm that)

However, I don't watch a lot of TV and dislike paying for another service that I don't use much, so thought I would check out the FTA and then update from there if I wanted.

I picked up a CW800S box at the neighbouthood garage sale recently and hooked it up in the Clipper.
I was able to test the OEM dish installation and it tested OK, but I am still in the relearning process to get locked on to a satellite. ( I am going to have to move the Clipper to the rear of the garage to clear the large trees to the south of my existing parking spot.)

I do need to do some more homework before I get to watch the test pattern.

And yes, it takes more time than its worth, but it it just another challenge right?

Dish Network has a pay as you go plan so you can just get it for 30 days when you want to use it.

There is a steep learning curve in fta. Has changed a lot in the last couple of years . You need a current box, anything one year old will not allow you to maximize channels. Once set up works great.
