Question CD Changer Question

Have a 2006 Classic with a good Sony CDX-F5000 radio in it. I hooked up a Sony CDX-757MX CD changer to the radio via the one control and two audio cables. The changer does not work. Rats! Do I need an intermediary unit between the two? Or what? Any help appreciated! Befuddled Fred

Fred,
Our '06 Classic came with a changer and I do there is no "intermediate" unit. I will take a look at ours in more detail and report what I find. As far as I remember the cables from the changer disapear in the enclosure for the tuner / DVD player.

Thank you. I slid the radio out of its slot so I could plug the changer's cables in. Checked the connections several times. . . but if you have another device in your enclosure, that might give me an idea. Don't give up any of your quality time to do this. Thanks again!

Fred,
I am at my daughter's house for the day and will check the connections tomorrow. I do know that I have to hit the "source" button on the tuner to "activate" the changer. I will also get the model numbers for comparison. I know that both the tuner and changer are Sony, the one and only.

Ditto that...you have to change the "source" setting on the unit for it to recognize the CD changer and send it into action... Good luck!

Fred,
OK, here is the poop. My components are as follows. They are all factory installed...

Head Unit - Sony MEX-R5

CD Changer - Sony CDX-757MX

This may be what you are lacking...

Sony Aux-In Selector XA-300

I have instructions for it in the binder that the dealer gave to me, but I can not see it through the hole where the head unit is installed. I did remove the head unit, but there is a PILE of wires back there.

In looking at the instrctions the multi disc changer has a left and right RCA jack and a bus controller jack that plug into the source selector and another cable comes with the source selector that has left and right RCA jacks and another bus connector that plugs into the back of the head unit.

I hope this all helps.

Removing the CD Changer

My 2007 Safari SE has the exact same components that Carl shows in his post just above. This year I replaced the Sony analog TV with a digital set. The Sony TV had audio out jacks, the new one doesn't so there is an unused audio cable running to the components, never used that anyway. And because we use an iPod for our music, the CD Changer is dead weight and taking up space in the front overhead bin.

Has anyone removed any of these items from their units? Looks like it should be straightforward if you can sort through the pile of wires Carl mentions--I've seen it. I'm not sure how the Aux In Selector figures in all of this and can it be removed too and still have a functioning system.

Thanks,

Randy

Randy,
We play our I-pod and Sirius satellite radio through the Aux jack that is mounted on the side of the radio enclosure and I think it is source #3. The connection is just a Radio Rhack type cable that has a small stereo head phone jack on one end that goes into the I-pod / satellite receiver and left and right RCA jacks on the other end that plug into the corresponding jacks next to the head unit. There is also a 12V power source to provide the juice for the devices.

If the wires can be disconnected from the CD changer I would just disconnect them and push the wires back into the hole from whence they came, being careful to leave just the ends sticking out so that if I wanted to hook up the CD changer again I could without too much trouble. I never considered removing mine because we still play the CD's in addition to the satellite radio and I-pod. Sooooo much music and so little time.

Carl,

I use that same input for my iPod. It is Aux 3 on the base unit. I guess that means it's coming through the Aux In Selector. I may remove the CD player as you suggest and just tuck the cables back into the hole. It's a power drain, as every time I power up the trailer I can hear it clicking away as it tries to find CDs. I may test it first to make sure the base unit doesn't get confused with it gone. Just thought I could eliminate some of the wire mess and unneeded stuff since I was eliminating inputs.

Thanks,

Randy

Rudy,
I took the CD cassette out of our changer and it doesn't search for CD's as long as the cassette isn't loaded. I am sure it is still a power drain though. Another audio power drain is the fact that the sub-woofer (if so equipped) is always on. There is a thread out there in the ether where somebody installed a power switch to eliminate the power drain and the humming from the sub-woofer.

Carl,

Thanks. Never thought about the subwoofer. I don't hear any humming from mine, but an on/off switch is a good idea to conserve power when boon-docking.

Randy,
I found the one of the threads and it was CrawfordGene that installed the power switch. I also remember that he had a tough time installing it due to tight quarters. He also posted pictures of the switch install, but I haven't found that thread yet.

Here is the post where he mentions that he installed the switch, you may want to PM him to get the gory details...

CD Changer Gone!

I removed the CD Changer today and discovered that most of the wire mess is for the Changer. They have two cables, audio and control, that are 20' long, that go from the changer to the Input 1 ports on the Aux In Selector. The Selector is less than a foot away inside the compartment with the wire mess.

The radio, DVD player, iPod input, everything works fine with these two cables pulled, and you eliminate 50% of the wire mess and get back your storage space.

Guess I'll put the Changer on eBay and se if I can get some cash for it.

Randy
