batwing antenna 15/16" nut socket won't fit through inside skin

does anybody have an easy solution to tightening this nut? the hole in the aluminum ceiling is too small for a standard 1/2" drive chrome socket. i'd like to avoid getting shavings inside the trailer if i grind the hole larger. is there such a thing as a thinwall socket in that size?

I have one of these in my set: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...&sName=Sockets. It's about as thinwall as you're going to get. It is pretty thin, if you have any kind of clearance at all, it should work for you. There is also a deep socket version, but all my deep sockets are impact sockets.

All the large bolts on the engines I rebuilt (Minneapolis-Moline) were 15/16, so I know that size pretty well.

If you decide to enlarge the hole you could have a helper hold a vacuum cleaner hose up there as you work and you probably would catch the bulk of the cuttings

thanks for the replies. that is the socket i was trying to use, lol. i even tried a shower valve socket but that is thinner but not thin enough. a neighbor suggested peening the edge with a body work type spoon to open it up. i'll see how that goes tomorrow. i might try to find an 1.25" hole saw. i can pre-drill a scrap of wood to keep it centered.

Ricky,
My father dealt with the same issue a short time ago on his Winegard. He had a 31/32 basin wrench which fit in the opening perfectly. Basin wrench is used on old style sinks to get at the faucet nuts from beneath--it has a very slender profile. Maybe a rental place has one or if you have a plumber buddy you could borrow one from him.
Good luck.

my resolution was to peel the edge of the hole with a pipe and hammer. a gentle tap was all that was needed to peen the edge.i tried to thread the nut by hand and even that was too tight to verify that the nut was not cross threaded. I used a shower valve socket to tighten the nut because the standard depth socket would not reach the nut. a deep socket might have worked.

when all assembled, the mast would only lower part way, then would bind. a little lubricant made it work like silk.
