I am not currently using an AGM battery in my trailer. However, I do use an AGM battery in my UTV and it is mounted on its side. Odyssey specifically states that it is OK to mount the battery in any orientation. That alone tells me that ventilation under normal circumstances is not necessary.

If you cook the battery then all bets are off. But if that happens, you have a different problem.

I don't vent my AGM

If you ever camp in the cold, having your battery warm inside is a big advantage.

Hi Team!

I use this locking battery box from Torklift that is mounted behind my propane tanks.
Thanks

What size did you get, and is it cramped? I need to figure out a storage box for the front of my 22’ Sport where my battery used to be. Just had it moved inside this week.

Not cramped st all. Looks clean and classy.
Had to have them add a couple of risers to allow it to sit above the Blue Ox stabilizer units attached to the tongue.

Size 26-3/4L x 8-3/16W x 13D

Venting of AGM Batteries

Absorbed Glass Mat. The electrolyte solution is jelly-like and absorbed in a fiberglass mat between the plates.

This has several advantages, including reduced metal shedding from the plates and less stratification of the acid in the electrolyte. It also greatly reduces gas production and helps any gas recombine.

The downside: the battery cannot be refilled if it dries out, it has pressure release instead of vents, and the charging profile is different than the common flooded lead acid battery. The do have a better discharge profile as well.

They are nice for installing inside a trailer as they don’t vent hydrogen gas which is flammable or explosive in the right conditions. They don’t have to be installed upright either. They do tend to be a bit more expensive than common flooded lead acid batteries.

For my use case, I have two six volt GC-2 golf cart batteries in a plastic box outside on the tongue of my trailer, and a solar charging system that adjusts for temperature of the batteries. To me, the advantage is that I can get GC-2 batteries at Costco or Sam’s Club wherever I might be if I need new batteries.

Lithium batteries are a whole different discussion, of course.
