redoing the '94 Univolt 12VDC system

Hello, right now I'm working on weathertightening a '94 Excella 28', but at some point I'm going to examine and update/modify the electrical system. Currently the 12VDC system is operating with the original 1994 converter, without batteries in place and the battery cables insulated.

What are the options for updating to a reliable 12VDC power configuration? - converters, generators, solar?

If your 94 Univolt/Converter is original, you likely have a Magnetek and they are not designed to work without a battery for filtering and regulating the DC output.

Thanks.

Well, I tested the voltage with a DVM. Depending on the load (i.e. the number of 1156 bulbs turned on), the voltage reads between 13 and 14 volts. I don't have an oscilloscope handy to look at the waveform, but I could go fetch one if needed.

It's likely going to vary since they don't have internal filtering. New units do. You have to keep a healthy battery in the system to filter/regulate the voltage.

Well, then I'll keep it shut off unit I can replace the batteries. I'm still considering whether to go solar first, and then change out the converter later if the solar system can't keep up to the demand.
