Power Converter & Power Supply
I just got my first Airstream yesterday. It's a 1973 23' Safari. I am asking for advice on what is a good Power Converter & Power Supply.
Thanks

Airstream's currect Univolt, that has been used for some time, works well.

If you plan to charge a battery, one of the multi stage charging units like the Iota or PD would be best.

I also installed a 45 amp converter (9200 series) from Intellepower (PD) and am very pleased with this product. I purchased this from Best Converters.

progressive dynamics all in one unit without good instructions
I picked up one of these: Progressive Dynamics 4045: 45 Amp Converter + AC/DC Distribution Panel but will have to seek out an electrician as the "instructions" have absolutely no step by step instructions. This was very disappointing because i was hoping to learn alot along the way and do it myself--perhaps that's their way of not getting into legal trouble by offering advice to novices. i just thought i'd throw that info out if you're considering the product. Also, i just figured out that the cutout for the breakers is off by a quarter inch--so you can't fill as many circuits as they advertise. I purchased the breakers they recommend as well. so far i'm unimpresed but i hear it's a good product--we'll see. cheers--ted

I replaced only the univolt and not the 12 distribution panel because the panel was fine, only the univolt was shot. Replacement of the univolt with the PD 45 amp converter is very straight forward. You connect up the 12 volt wires (positive, negative and ground the unit) and plug the converter into an outlet ( I installed a new receptacle because the old univolt was hardwired in). The new converter is about 1/4 the weight and size of the old univolt.

Replacing my Stock Converter
After pricing the LifeLine glass mat batteries that came with my boondocker package, I have decided that replacing the Parallax 7455 that came with the trailer will be cost effective (even though it is less than a year old) over the long run. Following the advice of Randy at WWW.BestConverter.com, I have ordered the Iota DLS-55 with IQ4 smart controller. I am hoping to mitigate the expense, by using the 7455 as a power supply for some of my ham radio stuff, if it turns out to have clean enough output.
Regards,
Ken

regarding my comments above on the Progressive Dynamics Coverter above: After talking to an electrician--i was able to dicipher the progressive dynamics all in one converter diagram. they do give a diagram--just not an exhaustive orderly "step by step instruction manual". and the cover does fit fine--i made a mistake on that. i just wanted to clarify my comments above. sounds like you are getting good advice here. cheers--ted
