Pd1610

Would appreciate any help… my PD1610 inverter is showing an E-5 error. Batteries are fully charged. Checked connections and reset inverter. Heard the inverter click; it works for a bit then the same error. When on shore power the inverter shows correct battery voltage and 120V in. If I unplug shore power the 12V system will run for a bit then die out with only a fan, one light and refrig working. Any ideas on where to troubleshoot futher? I’ve checked the connections, all are tight. Is it simply a dead inverter?

Hi

According to the manual E5 is "internal error". E7 would be DC voltage error. The manual suggests you call PD if you get an E5. That strongly suggests that the inverter is dead.

I would not put the PD inverters at the top of my "ones to buy" list .... having one fry is not a big surprise.

Thanks Bob; I thought as much. Any ideas on a replacement? Am checking with local airstream repair center for a 2000W Victron, if there is such a size; I don’t want to go through the wiring an increase sizing to suit a larger inverter…

Hi

There is a 2,000W Victron. It's almost as expensive as the 3,000W. What pretty much everybody buys are "hybrid" units. You replace both the inverter and the converter / charger with the single unit. Less clutter and you get better charging performance.

The Xantrex stuff seems to work pretty well. They are a bit smaller than the Victron's (and a bit less expensive). Like the Victron the unit to buy is the hybrid version.

With a hybrid, the same cables that power the inverter also charge the battery. That way you can run more charge current than the typical stock wiring permits. As long as you are around 2,000W or less I would *guess* ( = I don't now ) the wires that are there would be adequate. Very much worth checking to be sure ..... At the 3KW level, if you want to actually *use* the 3KW, you would need more wire.

Thanks for the further input. Ive pretty much settled on the newer Victron 2000VA unit; already have a Cerbo unit, just need the updated display.

Hi

The Victron has a really big / heavy transformer in it. That's the only real drawback to their approach.
