My question is, what is the black wire and where do I hook it up-positive or neg? There was also a ground wire on the outside of the unit. I know where that one goes.
Thanks for your help.

The short answer is that you don't hook it up.
The original univolt had a connector that powered a bulb in the control panel when you were plugged into AC. Newer converters don't have this connector. Some owners have used a wall wart that converts AC to
12v DC, plunged it into an AC outlet and connected it to that connection. Others have found that a night light plugged into one of the AC outlets serves the same function. I keep a digital AC voltage monitor plugged into an outlet, myself. Heck, that light never worked in my control panel anyway.
