While the batteries are you, I’d recommend that you spray down the interior of the battery box with some semi-gloss black rustolium paint for measure.

I was thinking along the same lines. Thanks

Q: should I put in a generic type tray or go without; I know my new 27T will not fit in the current battery tray that held the Interstates.
I have a FC 2017 model. Someone has a photo to share with the newer battery boxes it would be appreciated.

FWIW, somewhere I saw it recommended just putting a thin sheet of plexiglass under the batteries. Easier to sacrifice that rather than the bottom of your battery cabinet?

Final install minus the hook up to the terminals. Going to cut a piece of 1/4 lexicon as a stabilizer between the wing nut and the batteries. Snug fit with batteries placed sideways in the box. Very little wiggle room.

Why did you choose the 12V Lifeline's over the 6V's?
Thanks!

We boondock on an infrequent basis. Maybe 21 days or so a year. We also knew we would be using a generator to recharge as needed ... so discussing and going back and forth with experts such as Lewster the consensus was I would benefit the most from the AGM 12v set up.

Thank you for the information! What advantages do the 12V have over the 6V in your situation?

No need to rewire the box for 6A. That about covers it

AGM battery replacement
Our 2018 30’ Classic is new to us but very lightly used.
We finally had a chance to set it up in our yard to practice “faux” boondocking. Since this is the very first time it has been unplugged in 6 months of our ownership the batteries were barely 9.1v and the solar was not enough to keep anything running. Batteries seemed okay when plugged into 50 AMP and when hooked to the Honda 7000 generator but very weak. It barely kept the Firefly screen lit.
Just because the AS is new to us, batteries are dated 4/17 original and we have no idea how the batteries were maintained by the previous owner...we want to replace them with a new pair.
What is the best replacement battery for our AS (with factory solar) without battery box modifications. We will split our time between boondocking and shore power camping.
I have always been a fan of Interstate but Lifeline looks interesting and well.
Suggestions?

Lifeline has always been the gold standard for AGM batteries. Not to say there are not good, cheaper brands. Before I switched to Lithium, I always used Lifelines, Airstream and sailboat.

Thanks Larry.
Looks like Lifeline AGM-27T would be a “plug and play” fit.
Amazon $358
Batteryguys $ 329
InvertersRus $ 313
Sound about right?
At double the cost of Interstate batteries they must be good.
Not complaining...Things need to work to make travels enjoyable.

Yep, sounds about right. Like I said...many other brands of AGM's out there. When I was offshore relying on batteries, I knew I could count on Lifelines. Sort of the same sentiment boondocking.

They lasted 11 Seasons in "Cloudsplitter", now in the basement as backup for the sump pump.👍

We purchased ours from Powerstride Battery. $328 each includes shipping. The batteries were drop-shipped directly from Lifeline.

What option do you use to attach the solar being there are only two post on a Lifeline GPL-27T?

I installed a lifeline Grp27 in a vintage trailer and when I sold it 12 years later, the battery was still working great. If you want to get long life out of a good battery, replace the converter with a multi stage unit. I am a big fan of Progressive Dynamics converters.

We received the new batteries on Saturday from InvertersRUS.
Installed them on the coldest day in May...in PA...ever. Day time high was 46 degrees with a ferocious wind. But it was worth it. The old batteries were toast. The new ones arrived charged at 12.9. Now staying at 13.6 plugged in.
They were pretty much plug and play. We took good pictures before taking the old batteries out. Painted the box, touched up a few rusty spots and cut a battery mat. Other then the weight at 65lbs a battery, the install went fine.
We have been keeping the heat on as we have been having record low temperatures after de-winterizing the AS two weeks ago. The heat has been toasty and the new batteries have kept the inverter fan more quiet...not cycling as often.
I guess we get to test the AC by the end of the week...81 degrees predicted.
We are happy...and still no place to go. Looking at backyard camping for now.
