Inverter Swap & Learn

The 600 watt inverter in our 2012 23D was fried when we bought the unit last year. Talking to AS parts in JC, they advised that they had stepped up to 1000 watts on current 23D units, and that it would be easy for me to do the installation. Bought it. Squeezed it in (larger dimensions). Last step was to plug in the “phone line” to the remote switch. Surprise, the connector on the installed phone line in the trailer didn’t fit into the inverter. Yes, a new phone line with correct connections came with the unit, but that would require rewiring....not likely! Found RJ22 connectors, and the required crimping tool on Amazon and fixed the problem. BTW, AS knew this to be an issue when they upgraded.

For some reason, the old installed remote switch would not activate the inverter. No problem as a new switch came with the unit. Surprise, the new switch had a square back, while the old one was round, and square switches don’t fit in pre-drilled round holes. Out came the jigsaw to enlarge and make the hole square. Eureka, it all worked!

I am totally pleased with taking on this change out, as I’m not wired that way. But, what I didn’t do was look to see what I needed for the occasional boondock. A 1000 watt inverter won’t run a single serve Keurig, or a small space heater, or the hair dryer the Mrs uses. Great, it will run the TV if you can pull in a signal, which isn’t likely when boondocking. Found a non-Keurig that will work (Chulux, on Amazon) and will look for other items that will work with the 1000 watts.

So my question to AS is why not put a 2000 watt invert in all units. The appliances we plug in would seem to suggest this.

Initial inverter capacity is rarely enough once you get used to the convenience of having ac power no matter where you are. I started with 400, went to 1500, now at 2000 with 4 batteries and 375 w solar capacity. Some days the coffee pot and microwave struggle. It’s tough owning an Airstream. Jim

We had the same experience with our 16’ Bambi inverter. The original 600 w failed and we received a 1000 w warranty replacement that was rather tight in the space Airstream had installed the original.
Although the 1000 w worked fine, we decided that when not plugged in, our coffee maker was necessary so I finally installed a 2000 w unit in a different location. I think I posted pictures here a few years ago. One thing that surprised me was the gauge of the wire Airstream chose to power the original inverter. It was pretty minimally spec’d for the 600 let alone the 1000. You may want to consider running some calculations on the wire vs load...

Good read, thanks. West has a better return policy than AS. No return on electronics or special orders per the dealer I had to order through.

We have generators.
We regularly use our Airstream during winter months to travel to warmer places and it is not unusual to have to run the furnace all night while not plugged in. We have enough battery capacity to make it through a cold upper 20’s night and make coffee with the inverter the next morning.
We have no desire to run a generator in this instance.
