Do I need a temperature sensor?

I have 2x Trojan T105 batteries, planning on the Victron 712 bluetooth monitor.

Do I also need the temperature sensor? Can it indeed replace the stock power wire for the Victron? (ie. the temp sensor provides power and reads temp)

Thanks

You don't need the temperature sensor, it's an option and no the sensor wires cannot serve as the power lead. there is a separate phone jack interface cable to the shunt or USB to the Color Control whichever you are planning to use.

The Victron Smart Battery Sense module provides temperature and voltage compensation for Victron SmartSolar charge controllers without a BMV-712. I use this with my 6V wet-cell golf cart batteries instead of a BMV-712. It works perfectly. I have mine mounted outside the metal battery box because the 3m version does not have a powerful enough signal to consistently work from inside the box. The new 10m version should work from inside the battery box. All you do is connect wires to the positive and negative battery posts, stick the module to a battery, and communication is wireless back to the Victron SmartSolar Controller mounted inside your Airstream. $39.10 https://www.amazon.com/Victron-Batte...07RTYGMBD?th=1

I believe the Victron Smart Battery Sense is incompatible with the BMV-712, probably because both would be attempting to provide temperature to the Victron SmartSolar Controller. If you want to have a BMV-712, then I would recommend buying the temperature sensor. With a BMV-712, you need to run a wire between the BMV-712's Shunt and the battery. Temperature compensation will help your batteries charge more efficiently in hot or cold weather, and will possibly increase battery lifespan by 20%. My batteries frequently are being charged with the battery box reaching 110 degrees here in Florida so I feel temperature compensation is required.
