I would like to replace my single ext. Lead acid AGm battery with 1 or 2 Lithium battery mounted inside

I would like to mount them under the Left side of the bed where the converter is located.

how many and what type of battery could i deploy

i want to get these for longer longer no-AC run time and and as I prepare for future Solar on the roof

The lithium batteries can be damaged if charged in freezing weather, although you can discharge them.

Are you familiar with the nastiness of a lithium battery fire and how vulnerable they can be? Are you sure you want them inside the trailer with you?

only SOME types of Lion battery have that issue.
there are many different types of chemistry

the ones in your phone are NOT the same as those used in trailer applications.

do a wiki search on Lion and see also the OEM Lion vendors pages, they all explain the differences

cheers

You have many options so it depends on the capacity you desire and how much you want to spend. Search the forums for examples of installs. I used a Lithionics battery and Victron components. Troutboy used Victron batteries and components. Others here have used Battleborn batteries. Check out the AM Solar website for packages and educational materials.

Most (all?) of the batteries being used for these applications are LiFePO4 formulation, and not the Lithium Polymer (LiPo) ones that are most sensitive/dangerous. The reality is that everyone's $300 "power vault" products that they buy on Amazon are likely far more dangerous than a lithium battery bank from BattleBorn or Victron. In the case of Victron, the safety factor really depends on the BMS you deploy...but even a badly managed LiFePO4 battery isn't nearly as dangerous as the cheap LiPo power devices sold on Amazon.

That being said, I installed one BattleBorn battery under the 22FB bed between the water heater and the 12V power distribution area...and I could probably fit a 2nd one if I decide to. Keep in mind that 1 BattleBorn 100Ah battery has more energy than 2 AGMs would. We had 2 lead acid Interstate batteries on the A-frame, and replaced them with the single BattleBorn which offers far more capacity. Since you can, at most, use 50% of the capacity of a lead acid battery we had at most 84Ah before, we now have 100Ah and shaved a lot of weight off.

You will also need to replace your power converter, otherwise it will be an endless guessing game as to the state of your battery and it will almost never be at 100%. What you do for charging your lithium batteries really depends on what batteries you go with, in the case of BattleBorn the PD4655 with lithium support is a great option.

I will say that when you do anything with a Lithium battery bank you really need to install an actual battery monitoring system (e.g. Victron BMV-712) as you cannot gauge capacity based on voltage at all...so any onboard monitoring will be useless. I mounted our BMV-712 next to our power disconnect switch under the front bed as well.

I keep meaning to write up our upgrade process, as it isn't just plug-and-play if you wish to actually fully benefit from the conversion. You can find a lot of threads on here on the subject, if you have any specific questions please ask.

TNX SHD and others.

i bought the PD4655, just before they released the lithium option. i only had it for a few weeks.

i called and they will not accept it back or take it as a trade in, thus i have to eat the whole cost.

When the 22FB comes out of winter storage, i will measure up the area to see what i can put in. i would like to start with one lion . but measure and leave space for a second

No, it is still a great upgrade for many. At worst you should be able to get half the cost back. Maybe a bit more if it's someone you can help install. A battery bank is a great idea, but somewhat beyond what most need unless they are extensive off grid campers.

A few side roads is just part of the adventure. Pat

Talk to Randy at Best Converter. Someone may be happy to buy your PD4655 to use with an AGM bank.

We have a 600 amp-hour lithium iron phosphate battery under the front sofa of our 2014 31' Classic. We have a 300 amp-hour lithium iron phosphate battery immediately in front of the street side wheel well and under the sofa of the dinette with no loss of storage space in our 2015 23D International Serenity. We use a Magnum MS-2812 in the Classic that has nine 100 watt solar panels on the roof and the hybrid Magnum MSH-3012 in the 23D with five 100 watt panels on the roof.

Keep the lithiums inside and use aquarium heat pads underneath if necessary. Mine are under the island bed and have stayed well above freezing for the last 3 winters with no pads.

good idea to keep them warm

i have plant heaters from Lee valley. i could use them

so in the winter, use the solar to charge the battery and run the heaters under the battery, as the battery drains, the solar keeps it up.

Maybe ill try that next fall and see if my perpetual motion design works
