I know that AGM has some reduced capacity but is this move worth it in terms of capacity and amp hours?
A little bit about our travels, we have a 2015 30ft bunk and would like to have the capacity of going off grid for up to 6-7 days.
|
You have 600 watts of solar and probably a good amount of storage. You can go 6-7 days off grid on the system you have now. I have 300 watts of solar and 400 AH of AGMs and do fine 3 weeks off grid. In fact my trailer hasn't been plugged into 120 volts to charge the 12 volt side in 3 years. I only use solar for the 12 volt side of things and rarely do on grid camping.
But if you have money to burn, help the Chinese economy out by buying the lithium. Would I buy lithium if I were to start from scratch, yes probably, but I'm not going to throw away good batteries for a marginal improvement. Personally I'm not going to see any improvement in the way I camp. The AGMs work just fine and last 8-9 years. Maybe in 5 years when they go I'll reconsider lithium. Currently we are building batteries for cars and I can see they have a long way to go before I would consider the product. I know the amount of R&D that went into these and what it takes to design and build them. I somehow doubt that the batteries you are buying for RVs have anywhere near the amount of R&D and workmanship in them, yet people claim they'll last 25 years. Ya right. You believe what you want I'll stick with the AGMs for the time being.

I would be really interested in how you calculate the TCO of Lipo vs Lead Acid AGM or otherwise to get payback in 6 years?

The DC to DC gets around a computer controlled voltage management system. Also Diesel Rigs do NOT want the truck at idle so no charge goes to the Trailer on the 7 wire. Some charge may go after the TV at speed over time and distance when the TV needs are satisfied and it then allows some charge to the Trailer. In addition a DC-DC 30- 60 amps designed to safely charge lithium is a nice feature especially if you do not have solar on the roof.

Thank's...
I finally fingered out that it is most likely a design difference with the newer TV's.
Our '06 Burb 8.1 has the 220a option and has been more than capable.
I can understand a problem when sitting, if connected thru the 7pin, but have not had a concern while towing.

Nothing cooler than quick charging LiFePO4 batteries!
Ditch those ancient stinky lead acids. What is heavier than lead?
Your trailer will be happy. Watch movies, run the fans, turn on the lights.
Its 2020 not 1859.

Totally agree and have made the swith in my AS class b. But as others have pointed out, at a cost.
I'm baffled we are not seeing a gradual cost curve going in the down direction for lithium batteries. Prices seem stuck at about what they've been the past several years. A 25% price drop would make the decision easier. 50% would spell the end of lead acid technology in the rv world.
The price drop will come, someday, but too late for me.

Waiting...a good plan for a whipper-snapper, but I'd most likely drop before the prices.🥴

Renogy comes the closest, but you have to catch them on a Black Friday Sale similar to what they ran last December. Unfortunately, I didn't catch the best prices but I could have. I just didn't pull the trigger because I was satisfied with the two 100Ah batteries I already have. But as you can see at the post below, I had 4 in my cart their Black Friday + another coupon code at under $600 per battery.
Nothing has come close to those prices since, at least that I've seen.

I think it depends on what you expect out of them.
Nothing has a warranty comparable to battle born.
If high discharge rates are your thing BB may not be the best solution. If a drop in battery with integrated BMS is important that's another category vs the individual cell style.
Different strokes for different folks, are looking at a "drop in"?
Hard to beat BB i that case.

There is no age parameters for a WS.👍
When I was an 18yr old WS my parents knew nothing, when I was 21 I could not believe how much they had learned in 4yrs.

Ain't that the truth! Yeah I am turning 39 this year and I find myself starting to use WS for folks in college and high school!
