I am considering a Smart Battery Sense for my solar install. I am little concerned about the quality of the signal, given it has to penetrate the metal battery box and a couple of layers of aluminum to reach the charge controller (which will be about three feet away. Anyone have experience with this device?
I just installed one last week, but I only have plastic between the batts and the controller. However, their newer model has a 10 meter range. I can get the signal on my phone in the house. I don't think you'll have a problem.
Be sure you get the newer model. There are still older ones in the marketplace.

Installed the Victron 100/30 charge controller inside front corner street side and the “matchbox” size battery sensor in the battery box today. Bought the 10m comm distance battery sensor cause that is what I saw on Amazon. Controller and battery sensor are 4 ft apart and separated by the plastic battery box and aluminum shell, out and inner. No problem getting sinsor signal.
The smart sense come with a 3 or 4 foot lead. I ran it up the long screw of the propane tank holder to get it out of the battery box. My solar controller is in the wardrobe some 15 feet away. It works just fine.
As other have said, get the long range model.
