Victron 712 Problems

Gang,

I have a Victron 712 battery monitor and shunt... and it's totally given up the ghost. I replaced the electronics unit (thinking the unit must be bad) but the replacement unit is also showing no joy.

Batteries have charge and other parts of the system are working great. Charge monitor died while the trailer was sitting in my driveway for an extended period, so it aint like something rattled loose.

Any ideas how I should troubleshoot this?

Thanks!

"electronics unit"?

Shunt or Monitor?

I'd call Victron. Maybe the positive connection to the shunt has come loose? Doubt it is the monitor.

I replaced the head unit but I have not replaced the shunt.

I checked all the connections on the shunt. Tight as a drum.

I also disconnected and reconnected the positive lead (temp sensor) to see if that would "reboot" it, but no joy.

One last detail: I discovered that the monitor was dead at the same time that I found my batteries had dropped down to a little lower than 50%—the lowest discharge I've ever had. (Days of rain prevented the batts from recharging all the way.) Everything in the trailer was working fine (e.g. lights not dimming) except the fridge shut off from low voltage.

You may have started the diag at the wrong end...I believe the shunt would be the more likely culprit.

Did you have a voltage reading at 50% SOC.

On the first test I did with the BB's the SOC got to 50% with out effecting the fridge.

I had a voltage reading from the trailer's in-built monitor, but the Victron had already gone dark. (And yes, I know the trailer's monitor is not accurate... I'm guestimating the 50% based on my experience with that monitor and, perhaps, a bit a wishful thinking. It was reading 11.9 and under load in the cold.)

I have been thinking that replacing the shunt is my next step. Slightly annoyed that it (likely) has given up the ghost so soon after installation.

Where did you purchase? How long ago?
I got ours from Amazon, just for the return option with Prime.

Victron has a pretty good C/S reputation, call see if they would send a replacement...BUT, it would not be unusual if returns are restricted if it was a DIY install. 🤨
