Running two Champion 2,500s off lpg port?

Who is running two Champion 2,500s off their lpg low pressure trailer port? I’d like to do this. I have seen some run two Honda 2,200s that were modified for propane do this. I talked to Airstream customer service and was told the port is low pressure 11 inches of water and the max btu withdrawal is 25,000 on the sticker, and the port was not designed for high and/or pressure and Btu usage. I was told I won’t damage anything on the trailer if I pull more than 25,000 btu, however the stove, furnace, and or hot water heater may not work while I’m doing this. I’m fine running two generators on the low port. However, I don’t want to buy two generators if only one will run on the low port. Thanks Bill

Hi Bill,

I think you’d be okay; we have two Champions, a 3400 and a 2500 but I haven’t tried to run both at the same time.

Have you seen the Champion 4000? It would run one AC unit with power to spare and lighter than two 2500’s. Was there a reason you needed a pair of 2500’s?

Yes, I’ve seen the Champion 4,000

Yes, I’ve researched the Champion 4,000, in fact I like the Wen 3,600 better and it’s cheaper. The Champion 4k and Wen 3,600 are both pretty loud running, especially at high power. The first would give 2,700 and the second 2,600 Watts with propane at 50 lbs, each. The Champion 2.5k provides 1.65 W full power and two would provide 3.3k Watts, about 30A! at 39 lbs each. I could pack two when I plan to use the AC a lot and one when I don’t. I could also run two 2.5ks at lower power and they’d be quieter than a bigger gen running harder. That’s my figuring.
Thanks Bill

One of the companies which converts Hondas, Genconnex, has a FAQ addressing running two generators from the port. Essentially, you would need to replace the existing port 1/4 inch line and quick disconnect to 3/8 inch.

25000 btu = 7300 watts
https://www.calculateme.com/power/bt...to-watts/25000

Two 2500 watt generators = 5000 watts
Add losses due to inefficiency. Both should work with very little left to run other propane appliances.

You probably will not be running the propane furnace when running the air conditioner. You may wish to run the propane water heater.

An absorption refrigerator or a stove top burner will use very little propane. However, if you notice a color change to the burner flame you should worry about carbon monoxide production.

Pushing the propane supply system to its maximum capability will reveal any contamination or faults in the system. Sometimes water or oil accumulates in various places. If it has accumulated, you may see issues. Pipes and regulator may need cleaning.

An alternative is to connect one generator to the AS front tap. Disconnect the spare tank and connect the other generator through an additional regulator directly to the spare tank.

Our trailer had 3/4 " plumbing and 1/4" quick disconnect for the low pressure LPG.
So we changed that to a 3/4" quick disconnect to improve flow.
