Running a New Champion 4000 Watt Dual Fuel Generator from the LP Port

Thanks to everyone who shared their opinions on which generator to buy.

I decided to go with the Champion 4000 Dual Fuel generator. It’s lightweight, has enough starting watts to power my single 30-amp A/C unit without a "soft start," and runs on propane.

The only downside is that it doesn’t have electric start, so I’m hoping the traditional rope-pull version will work out okay with my elbows.

I’d like to run it off my trailer’s LP port, which I believe is a 1/4-inch quick connect. I think the Champion’s port is also 1/4 inch, but I’m going to call tomorrow to confirm. If anyone already knows, please let me know!

I therefore think I need to buy a double-ended 1/4-inch quick-connect propane hose. I searched online but didn’t find one right away. Maybe I’ll need to have one custom-made.

If anyone has used this setup, I’d appreciate any tips or pointers for the correct/best hose or starting up the generator on propane.

I noticed from product reviews that some people seem to have a hard time starting this model when using propane.

Thank you!

To run off the Airstream’s regulated propane port, you’ll need to split the Champion’s combined regulator/diaphragm hardware into two separate pieces. This is because you will no longer need the pressure regulator, but you still need to use the diaphragm (flow regulator).

After splitting the regulator/diaphragm, you’ll need a hose with a male end to plug into the quick-connect coupler on the Airstream, and at the other end a female quick-connect to attach at the Champion diaphragm.

Length of the hose is a consideration. A longer hose can get bulky, but allows you to place the generator far enough away to attenuate noise and reduce the danger of harmful combustion fumes.

Another option is to carry a portable 20-lbs propane tank and just use the provided regulator/diaphragm as is. This lets you set the generator far away at the limit of reach of your 30-amp shore-power cord. This also keeps the hose between the propane tank and the generator short, making for easier starts.
