Honda eu2000i won't carry its normal load
Anybody know what might have changed suddenly on my electrical system (overnight)?
We were camping this weekend - arrived and set up Friday evening. Saturday morning I cranked up the eu2000i for its usual duties: run the coffee grinder, then the microwave, then the toaster. Everything was fine - as it has been for the two years we've owned the Honda.
On Sunday I do the same thing, except the Honda powers up to speed to run the microwave - a bit louder than I'm used to - then trips off (goes back to idle - red light says it overloaded) with no output.
Just to make sure - I shut everything else off. Fridge and hot water heater were on gas only. Same problem, over and over. I have to shut down the Honda and restart it to bring it back online.
The only other hint I have is that with everything turned off in the Airstream, the Honda runs a bit above idle. It used to idle most of the time, except when an appliance was turned on. Now it runs about 10-20% higher, although not at full blast. Almost like there's something else pulling on it, but I can't find it.
Any ideas or suggestions?

I would try to plug a lamp or something else into it. With the airstream unplugged. That would isolate the problem Trailer short or Honda malfunction. Was it raining? moisture plays havoc with electricla or maybe a roadant chewed the wire?? Throwing out thing to check... I am not a honda person so I personally hve only had bad experiences with them. Maybe its just worn out. GFI's go bad and they trip easily also.

Hi Tin. I'll assume you're using the eco-throttle setting. I'd think mostly 120v appliances should impact the draw. It shouldn't affect it this much even if the fridge is on auto-switchover to electric. Now, my convection microwave's wattage rating is enough to really kick up my eu2000i's RPMs -- especially when I'm on preheat for the convection setting. You don't have any 120v resistive tank heaters like some of the newer Safaris?

You could always plug the microwave directly into the generator to eliminate the trailer.
One time my EU1000i sat too long and the gas went bad and it ran poorly. Fresh gas with a little Carb cleaner fixed it right up.

thanks for these ideas. Isolating the micro is an interesting one.
To further clarify, there does not seem to be carburetor or gas problems. I have nothing else turned on (except the inverter).
The Honda does not shut off. It simply trips the overload alert, returns to idle, and doesn't put out any electricity. I have to shut the engine down and restart to bring it electricity online (reminds me of my PC!).
With the generator warmed up for 30 minutes this afternoon (back home in the driveway) it was able to support the micro.
But an hour later - it wouldn't do it again.
Hmmmm... curiouser and curiouser!

Hi Tin,
I have the same problem.
The current resolution for me was to turn on the added surge protector which I had turned off because the generator was not grounded and I had an error message on the surge protector.
Previously I ran the generator with or without the surge protector on and it didn't overload, so I'm not convinced the problem is solved. .
Also, there has been rain here and the generator was outside in the rain, and freezing weather for several days.
All was well until the problem you had.

I had the same problem with one of my Honda's. I had to replace the inverter unit.
