With opinion comes friction, regardless of topic.
With Chinese goods you have about a 40-50% chance of getting a product that will continue to work longterm. The Costco return policy is very good but if you are relying on the generator you might want to consider the odds. If you are using it very casually you may find it ok. One random day it will stop working and you'll throw it out....you have to decide if it's worth the gamble.

Sorry, but I don't even OWN a generator....I'm a SOLAR GUY......remember???
And similar comments from me on the subject of Chinese products can easily be found on these Forums without much difficulty. I really don't care WHAT the product is! Unless there is no alternative, I will ALWAYS look for.......alternatives.

I don't have a small generator but it would be a nice to have. I have big noisy 5000w one and an old one that doubles as a welder. I would like to have something that would run the ac. The small hondas won't do that unless you have two.

Champion's website says their 3100 puts out 58 decibels in econo mode, though it does not say at what distance that was measured. http://www.championpowerequipment.co...rators/75531i/
Meanwhile, I'll keep working to make solar work for me whilst boondocking, and I hope we won't need a generator.
For one thing, I don't want to become a point source for noise and air pollution while camping. For another, I think its fun to finagle with solar until we find a solution that works well for us. That said, I will admit to admiring generators in the campground that are the quietest and least intrusive. Hondas are usually at the top of that list.

i'm with Lew - I back solar over generators. I really don't like noise, especially when I'm camping. And I'm from Oregon so what would you expect?

I agree on the solar; but there are days when most solar systems need just a little bit of help!

I also concede that if you need Air Conditioning, Solar isn't going to do the trick. That said, if I'm camping where there's no shore power, it's because I'm focused on fresh air and DC-powered Fantastic fans vs. locking myself up inside an air-conditioned trailer.

We had an AM Solar system installed this spring, 270 watts with AGM batteries (152 amp hours, about 120 amp hours usable). The trailer has all LED lights. We find our typical usage to be about 40 amp hours daily, perhaps up to 50+ amp hours when nights are extra cool and the furnace runs more (this is mostly mountain camping- we generally set the thermostat to about 60 F at night). Our power usage is not particularly frugal, we could trim our usage somewhat if we wanted.
On a sunny day, our batteries will easily recover to 100% charge during the day on solar, even in a site with 50% shade. On cloudy/rainy days, we won't get back to 100% through pure solar. One or two days of cloud is fine, any more and some supplementary charge is required.

I think most if not all are measured at 23 feet, industry standard otherwise how could you compare them? If you scroll down on your link you will see the 23 feet number.
The Champion is a knock off of the Honda Handi http://powerequipment.honda.com/gene.../eu3000i-handi
Its noise at 23 feet is 57dB and Champion is 58.
Most specs are exactly the same, hope it helps.

Just wondering.
Where are the solar panels made?
We talk about a number of items that are made in America, but where do the profits go? On the back side of that, we have American companies that are now producing their products in foreign countries for foreign use.

I paid about $600 for an electric start 4000w unit from Northern Tool, has worked well so far. And in a truck bed with some custom soundproofing it is as quiet as the "high priced spread." It is of corse no where near as portable as the small manual start 2000w units, but can run an A/C unit nicely.
I am wondering where the Honda and Yamaha generators are made?

This whole biz of saying "600 is a good price" is not very accurate all on it's own
The value depends on various aspects - noise - serviceability - ease of use - weight - and long term dependability.
600 is cheaper than 900 but that 300 difference is meaningless if some or many aspects prove problematic
If the life of the generator is for example half that compared to a competitor than it was not a good value
One question I wonder when purchasing g anything mechanical is how I know these things

In agreement, Pharm. On a side note, are the Honda 2000s available for 900? I paid quite a bit more for mine this spring, and it was 'on sale'!!
Ah well, not the first time, probably not the last!
