23FBT w 4xObsidian 90w longs

I'm slapping on 3 Zamp Obsidian 90 watt Long Panels on a 2016FBT with no refrigerator vent. Anyone have a suggestion for roof mounts now that AM Solar kicked the bucket? I ordered four panels as they had B-Stock at Zamp and I couldn't pass up the price ($100 per panel).

I designed and had some made by sendcutsend.com in stainless.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6895690

For a set of 4 it was $44 but as you go up in quantity they get much cheaper. I'm using M6 stainless bolts/washers with stainless rivnuts in the panel frames.

I know literally EVERYONE has been looking for these. Thank you so much!

I just threw away money at my install. Bought the Zamp black Airstream legs missing the base… then bought another set of “universal” legs that included the bases. Solved the problem but your way was what I wanted all along.

I got the rest of my brackets yesterday so I have all 8 sets now. Now if it would just warm up so VHB will adhere.

Which ones did you use? Maybe a link?

Their “Airstream” mounts don’t seem to have a base plate. How does that even work?

Thanks.

Yeah, exactly what I thought. Zamp reply: “to screw into rounded airstream roof”. My reply you want me to drill a bunch of holes in my roof? Ok, “how are the long/short standard brackets with included bases that I can use VHB to mount different from the airstream specific mounts that don’t have bases?” Answer: because the Airstream versions are for airstreams”…..(slap self in head). So I should order an airstream set for each panel AND a same number of regular sets just so I can get the bases to attach w VHB? Long silence.. “yes” sales replied.

Just received mounts. Yep you guessed it. Long/short non-AS specific exact same mount as AS specific (less mounts). Sometimes you just want to bounce head against hard vertical surface.

I hope you can return the ones you aren’t using.

I tried to get 2 x 90W panels from the B stock but they weren't able to automatically ship to my address so I missed them.

I ended up getting 4 x 45W Zamp panels. Cost a bit more but not too bad.

These are going to replace the Rich Solar CIGS panels that barely lasted a year. They are about 50% delaminated now after another a couple more years of just sitting on the roof. In case you didn't guess, this is not a positive review for the Rich Solar panels!

I am excited to get these Zamp panels installed once the weather improves a bit.

I was so close to buying the cigs panels…till I started diving through the “sponsored” YT vids and got to the “yeah cigs panels are awesome for 12 months” posts. I’ll just go with tried n true. I thought the Obsiidians were my fiix till I started reading “you can’t mount em like you think, hugging close to roof on an Airstream because of the curvature. Ended up w the Zamp regular hi/low mounts with feet (which are identical to the “Airstream” specific Obsidian mounts). 4x90w Obsidian “long” mounts on each side. Interestingly the 2017 24 has no obstructions fore to aft. The fridge is the old side of trailer fridge vent (instead of roof mount vent). Perfect for the long 90’s. Would have definitely gone w 100’s if I knew they would fit the narrow width of 23. Rather than roll the dice I just went with what was sure to fit. Now the question is can I get 3 90’s end to end on one side…….

I will take the CIGS panels off that are situated on either side of the skylight and AC unit It is narrow but there is enough room for these narrow Zamp panels. I have a 190W GoPower turned sideways on the front of the roof area. and these will sit behind that one. I got the standard feet since the curvature is shallow on the sides and over ~10" there isn't too much curve to deal with.

I am going to make a front faring out of sheet metal and glue it with the VBH and structural caulking. This will allow the airflow to go over the panels.

I will also wire in my portable panel to give me about 550W all together. Should give me enough juice to keep the 250ah battery charged up.

You might have enough room to run the 3 x 90W panels down one side. I could get 2 1/2 of those panels down the curbside roof and I have a tiny Airstream

Thanks Peter. Yup just measured. The AS23 “quietstream” fairing is 177” long. The 90w Obsidian long panels are 59”. 59x3=177 so…. Ixnay on the 3 panels. Probably two per side and one transverse. I really like your fairing idea. What sheet metal thickness? Are you painting or powder coating?

Stupid spell check… quietstream fairing is 173 not 177. That being said… if I did mount em end to end… could I leave the overhang in the back? It would extend past the fairing but still over the AS body. Nah, I like your transverse idea. I’ve got room I think to go side to side on the single long panels (I’ve got 5).

I was going to us some left over flashing material. It already has a few bends in it. I would used some VBH tape and also some DOW 795 or 995 to adhere it to the leading edge of the forward panel. so about 14" long. It might require a bit of shaping to better fit on the curve of the roof. but not too hard. The material I have is pre painted 26g flashing. I think it was a drip edge os sorts before I put it in my storage.
