What is with the Big spot light on the newer AS

I just don't see what the use is for the big Led spot light on the door side of the newer FC .
Is this some kind of AS thing or is there some useful purpose?
Thanks

It's for lighting the patio side of the Airstream at night. Personally I don't like any direct lighting in my eyes so we never use it. I don't think a neighboring camper on that side would like it either, unless your awning was controlling it somewhat.

It's commonly called a "Scare Light", turn it on if someone or some animal is prowling around your Airstream on the entrance side at night.

There is a thread about scare lites and in this thread 2 posts showing home made cover from dog bowl first by LRS then copied by dznf0g. Many comments and people making cover after these 2 posts. This lite has been on AS many yrs. and other make of rvs have them to. The thread is forums under electrical-lites-interior and ext. scare lite replacement

It's not that bright. Or scary.

It's a flood light intended to illuminate the area covered by the main awning. Many SOB trailers offer the same thing.

I just picked up new 2017 25A, purchased unseen, just now realized I like the over door light on my Bambi better, step light not too bright on the steps, having trouble seeing to get key in. Also my light switch plate was lower just inside door, but higher up and in now to quick reach. Non of this a deal breaker, the AS is beautiful. Just have to wait a few weeks to actually camp.

It can be installed any where out side except rib line [rivet line] if no where orig. installed your model may have wires inside. A good AS repair shop could install w swt. inside, also when cutting skin should be able to locate swt. inside. If mounting where can fish wire inside to closed spot inside to get 12 volt supply. These lites are avbl. several AS parts places. I believe out of doors mart and Inland carry them. Highly recommend cover over lite made from dog bowl.they lite a wide area, IMO not good for patio lite cover makes under awning useful lite. My AS has lite just aft of front curve, further
back good under awning as would reflect down. ODM has older style that was used with metal mounting ring screwed into skin. Very durable. Also several other models of scare/lites.

What do you do with the dog bowl exactly?

Thanks,

Karen

I quoted thread of scare lite replacement posting by LRS and dnf0g with. pics of dog bowl mounted on AS. Bowl of proper size to mount over scare lite, leave rim on cut 1/2 side off and 1/2 bottom off this will reflect lite down not way out as unmodified does. As far as I no LRS made first one then dznfog made second. Very good idea.

And I made the third or fourth or fifth or whatever....
We all made them to prevent a brilliant light from being shined into a neighbour's bedroom.
Who ever designed THAT one should be condemned to use it!

I cut a piece of yellow film to fit the inside of the scare light. Cuts down on the luminance AND the bugs.

That light is a sore subject for me and cause of numerous sleepless nights especially when you are at a rally or close quarters and your neighbors forget they left them on all night and they are lighting up your interior too!!! If you have one, please make sure they are off when you sleeping so that others have a restful night too. They serve a purpose but can also be a nuisance. Now, stepping down from my soapbox - no light needed .

The scare light, IMHO, is a disasterous fail... I hate that all of the exterior lights are "cold" ... would so much have preferred a nice warm yellowish and much dimmer light. Especially the LED's mounted up under the awning. Another major fail. They can be dimmed, but they're still too cold of a temp.

I was really dreading having one of those on my trailer... and then was delighted to find that my 25fb has none... and instead has a "down light" above the steps (and a tube light under the awning).

Kind of like the yellow lens idea. As it is, the switch remains off except in very rare conditions. Pat

I had one on a previous airstream trailer and didn't get much use from it except when setting up in the dark.
Current trailer doesn't have one. I just use the step light and sometimes hang some awning lights if staying a few days. I have often thought about putting a strip of LED's under the trailer or along the awning rail.

Pic. looks like cut bottom side out and smaller cut outs at top of side but solid bottom of bowl. Any advantage this way from dznf0g cutting of bowl leaving only bottom of side open?
