turn signals backwards from truck

Just got an 88 Excella. Having and electrical problem with the turn signals. When right signal is on the truck, the left signal blinks on the trailer.

Where do we start to find this problem?

Need more information.

Does the right side blink when the left signal is on? This would just be an easy case of reversed wires on plugs of the TT or TV. Does the left side blink bright like normal or are you seeing the tail part flash on/off when the signal should be flashing? This could be a bad socket where the bulb is grounding out backwards through the other circuit. Could also bee a light bulb forced in the wrong way, don't laugh I've seen it. Check all the lamps with the tail lights on and off. If it only happens with the tails off, check for bad sockets in the lights that flash. Don't forget the side markers if they are wired to flash with turn signals. Post more info on what happens with each signal & brake with tail lights on & off.

turn signals backwards from truck

I suspect that some of the problem may be traced to the fact that your coach very likely was factory equipped with a 9-pin connector -- then was later converted to the current 7-pin type connector. It is hard to tell how a previous owner may have wired the plug. The original plug's diagram may help in at least giving a clue as to what each wire should have been linked to when the coach was new.

Good luck with your investigation -- it is always interesting to unscramble the connector on a Vintage Airstream!

Reversing the brown and red wires in the trailer plug, should fix the problem.

I would test the terminals in the truck receptacle at location 3 and 9 o clock to make sure the truck is wired right. The left will be at 9 and the right at 3 o clock. If they are correct the problem is in the plug as mentioned. If they reversed the trun signals you may want to check the rest of the wiring. This will show you.

These plugs and receptacles are very close quarters so be careful of shorts while you work.

70s 7 way connectors are wired different than the current standard. Anybody know in what year the wiring started following the industry standard?

Thanks Kevin! We have been looking for that diagram. We don't think the problem is in he truck since it worked perfectly with the last trailer.

We just reversed the wires and it works. Thank you to all who suggested that. You were right Kevin. It was a 9 pin at one time.
