Turn signal activates brakes
Also depressing the TV foot brake pedal locks up the yrailer brakes. Any ideas?
Also, my trailer is a 1973 Argosy. Do I stand a chance using the old turn signal wires, to pull new wires, or are the old wires come from the factory tied to something that would prohibit pulling them through.
The wires go from the umbilical chord throuch the chassis.

I remember reading the older AS wiring color code does not match current vehicles and must be checked at the connector to verify what wire does what before connecting to a vehicle.

YEP...went thru similar with our 63 Safari, test light TV connecter wires, note function.
Power each AS connector wire and note function.
Match TV to AS.
Repair/replace parts as needed.
Draw yourself,(and next owner)🤔, a diagram.👍

Do you have a brake controller in the TV? If so it is probably adjusted too strong for the braking. Back the power knob on the controller down to the minimum and try it again After you correct the connector wiring mistakes. Or the brakes are grabbing and need servicing. Grease on the linings will do that, The plug is wired wrong if the turn signals are going to the brakes. I know on my 87 trailer I had to remove a 9 pin plug and install a 7 pin and I think the color codes might not have matched. I do not think you have any chance of just pulling new wires to the signal lights. Never had these exact problems. But have dealt with a lot of trailer, TV wiring issues over the years.

More information would help IMO. What tow vehicle, for instance, and is your brake controller OEM or after-market?
Is anything new about your rig? You have been posting here for a while, and it seems likely that this is a new problem IMO. What equipment etc. is new? Have you done any wiring work in the trailer recently?
Good luck,
Peter

The clue that both the brake and turn signal activate the brakes, makes me suspect a short. Check the trailer plug and make sure it's not gunked up. Follow up with a simple test light or a volt meter and start tracing wires.

Its a Prodigy 1 brake controller
As I said everything worked fine....out of the blue it started acting up..I suspect mice
I might have to pull the belly off to rewire it.

It is probably something simple, not complicated. More trouble shooting needed with a simple test lamp.

Check the whole length of the umbilical cord...it may be a cut in the cord causing a short...ask me how I know

Hi, start simple first. I have found and fixed vehicles where the tail light bulb was bad. On a double filament bulb, one filament can break on one end and make contact with the other filament. This will make thing work weird. I also had a vehicle of my own where when I had a new hitch welded onto it, the welder melted two wires together. It was at night when I discovered it. I put my foot on the brake pedal and my dash lights lit up.
[both cases are a form of feedback]

Silver flash is correct. Don’t over think This. Clean the bulb socket on the tail light make sure that the bulb shell is still a good ground. The turn signal is back feeding to the controller. It has happened to me with my 75 Argosy MH cruse control. Simple things first.

If you have a chevy and the cruise control is also involved, it likely is a relay. Problem occurs whether or not you are connected to the trailer.
Google the symptoms and you’ll find it is not uncommon and readily fixed.

If you have a brake controller , it is probably adjusted too strong for the braking. adjust it so that its just locking the AS and then dial it down a bit
or
give Andy at CANAM a call. He is an EXCELLENT asset on how to dial it in.
he did ours and it now rocks 100%

One simple check is to look inside the umbilical cord plug. Back off the strain relief screw. Carefully back out the tiny screw that holds the hood of the 7 way plug in the plug housing and push out the plug internals to expose the wiring. Examine the wires that nothing is shorted.
If it is, repair, pull the cord back into the hood and try to find that little screw that retains the plug inside the hood and secure. Tighten the strain relied back down and travel on.
Safe travels.

You won't be able to access all the 12 volt wiring by going into the belly pan. It's above the floor. Check where your wiring comes into the trailer. It's possible something has come loose or touching other wires. Once it comes into the trailer it all goes different directions. Wiring standards are different from current so do not go by color. You need to go by functionality.
