Tail light housings?

'71 Int. Sovereign
What are the tail light housings made out of and what type of finish should they have?

They look like pot metal that had some sort of plating, but before I start smoothening and trying to polish I thought I would ask since pot metal does not polish.

If they are aluminum I will polish them up, but if they are pot metal I am considering chroming them...or is it better to just paint them and be done?

Thanks

Since there were no reply's I decided to give polish a try...they do seem to be cast aluminum. I used some very fine sand paper to strip them and smooth them out and then hit them with some rubbing compound by hand and they shined up pretty well.

They just looked a bit pitted like pot metal get, they seem ok now.
