If so, I'd recommend replacing the entire unit with a newer LED one, both for the reduced power consumption and to replace all the other ancient plastic before something else fails.

There are several out there, and etrailer isn't always a best-price source but that one's $12 so it's not bad. One thing I don't like about it is that it's a rocker switch instead of a slide, so it's probably easier for something shifting around in the compartment to accidentally turn on the light, but it can probably run for a week on the same amount of battery power that the old incandescent one would use overnight.
