Galley light and door switch wiring 1973 Safari

Hi all,

I want the switch by the door to work the galley light as was original to the camper. A P.O. replaced the original galley light with a small fluorescent. Maybe they couldn't get it wired right, but for whatever reason...it's not.

I have the wiring diagram from the service manual. The switch by the door has three prongs (picture). The middle pink one brings in power (best I can tell). The two outer heavy redwires run to the galley light. I think these are like "traveler" wires in a house 3-way switch setup.

Above the galley light, out of the wall hole come 4 wires...pink with a rubber quick connector, 2 red heavy wires, and white (photo). The PO had the two red wires connected together and capped off. The pink wire also connects to nothing. The PO ran a + wire over to the light fixture from the vent fan to power the light.

So: how was the original light fixture set up? Did the fixture switch have 3 prongs like the one by the door, and the pink here is power in and the reds go to the outer prongs? The manual shows the part number for the fixture switch as the same part number for the bedroom light fixture switch, the there is a clear drawing showing that switch having only two prongs.

Appreciate any help here!

I got no reply and I did manage to find a few threads about this. In the meantime, I found an original galley light for sale. It does indeed have the three-prong (double pole, single throw, I think it's called) switch like the switch by the door.

I also looked at the switch in the bedroom light...and it is the same switch, too, just with only two wires connected to make it on/off instead of on/on like the other situation with the galley light.

Also realized my main problem is that my door switch is bad! Ordered a replacement. Hopefully that will fix my problem.
