Great work!

Very nice.
Any plans on a backing plate?
Regards,
Sam.

C M Hoof Backing Plates

Thanks to Frank, we do have backing plates to work from. They're not a complicated design and they are entirely hidden under the lens, but they are stamped so doing a low production run like the originals is not possible. If we do them, we'd need to look at machining or doing a plastic base as a way to achieve a short run.

I can't commit to it right now. I have an enormous list of projects going right now and I have to follow the ones that are most popular first.

I'll look at the plates with a fresh eye to determine whether this is easier than I imagine. I would appreciate advise or guidance from those who have these lights on their trailers.

The base plate certainly is a simple enough shape, as far a tool and die is concerned. But Steve's right - the quality of one's "show" depends purely on the size of the "audience"!

Right now I would be happy just to get the lenses. I will fabricate my own base plate but it won't wrap around the lens like the originals. If the stamped plates become a follow-on project from Vintage, I will get some then. I love the prototypes. I would take a set even if the mold isn't perfect.

By the way, my 53 California Flying Cloud doesn't fit the thread title here, but this is definitly the legacy marker light that was original. There is no evidence of any other type of original marker light. Some newer teardrops were added probably sometime in the seventies and a whole new set of holes were drilled to accommodate them.

I think they're ready now!

I see these are for sale now on the Vintage Trailer Supply website. Lens only, no bases - $27.99 each. Link below.

C.M. Hoof Teardrops

Day late and a dollar short. I made these for my 1955 Wally Byam Holiday a year or so ago. I made four sets and was was planning on making more and listing them. Looks like VTS beat me to it!

you could make the window gasket for the pre 1951 trailer with the single windows. That is an item VTS does not have.

Well...I've made replicas of the Bargman "Trail Lite" fixture lens and all, an indoor sconce from a 49 Schult, a replica for the Vagabond Corncob outside lite, the 5" Art Deco outside door light for a 49 Spartan and several others but a window gasket THAT big is WAY out of my league. I have to stick with something that will fit in a 2.5 gal pressure pot!!! If you need something within that range let me know.

Looks like VTS won't be attempting the simply designed, stamped aluminum bases for the Hoof lights we've been discussing - that'd be a good one too (I'm all set, personally).

The lenses are listed on the VTS website but apparently not available yet. They indicate "out of stock"

I just added my email to their list of folks who want to be notified when they are in stock.....now I will just have to find the other two original mounting plates, which are somewhere in my mess!

I have a 1953 Clipper, and it has four, on the sides. I presently have two originals, which are very cloudy and two of the replacements, which are too small. All that were on it were red. Were the amber ones for front and rear high up on the trailers?

Lenses

OK,
I can't compete in quantities with VTS but if anyone is interested in getting a set in the next couple of weeks I'd be happy to make them for you. A couple of caveats though. My lenses have small imperfections from the molding process or picked up from the original. Even on close inspection and they are on the edges where it sits in the backing plate. I don't think they are noticeable from two feet away. The lenses are "Yellow" not amber as the original lenses from my Holiday were yellow and red.
Next is the turn around time, I can only mold one of these lenses per day. My process involves allowing the UV resistant polymer to cure in a pressure pot under heat for 16 hours. I only have a 2.5 gal pressure pot. And finally, I will be out of town until first of next week,
So now that I think about it VTS may have theirs in stock by then!

If there's any interest send me a personal message.

Thumbs up C M Hoof Co. marker lights

Lanny, those are great! Good work. Those imperfections are tough to avoid with this hand poured process. Ours will have a few little irregularities, too.

I have a 1951 CM Hoof catalog and the color they were selling was called "amber" but they always fade so yellow is perfectly authentic, too. And I'm not sure today's SAE acceptable amber color would have been the same in 1951 anyway.

Again, nice work.

Steve, that's extremely gracious of you. I made the mold for those several years ago. I sent out queries to a number of forums back then but the only responses I got back was no one had ever seen them?
I was a museum preparator years ago and molding and casting was my area so I figured I could probably clean up the best one of the eight I had and mold new ones. I re-learned a lot in the process. The materials are considerably better than they were in the late 70s!!
I was afraid to actually do to much to the original as they were so rare. I think today I would take it to the point I did and then paint it to remove the small blemishes. I also ended up making the red cap for my Bargman Trail Lite like the one you have. You didn't have it back then. After these small successes I even went so far as to make a new fixture all together. I needed two. It's been modified some from the original Trail Lite but it looks the same from the outside.
Thanks agin Steve for the comments about my lenses.

Gaskets and washers

Hey all, I made fixture gaskets and rubber washers for my Hoof lenses and have a couple sets if there is any interest. My original gaskets were made of what looked like roofing tar paper. I cast mine in hard rubber about 3/32" thick.
$4 per set of four with screw washers.

Have you contacted Steve at VTS ? Or are you looking for a unique biz venture of your own?either way its awfully thoughtful of you to consider the greater good with your original bases. I hope that you are able to find someone to make them. Sorry im no help.
