Townsend toilet

we are getting ready to re-zolatone our Caravel. We bought semi gutted and the plumbing system was nearly non existant. The bath was intact, but since plumbing was not connected, was wondering how to deal w/ this toilet. I just used a garden hose to fill black tank and toilet bowl- no leaks, and the Thetford dump valve seems to work and seal OK Am wondering how this toilet even works? There is only a supply going into the tiny holding tank, but I don't understand how the thing works. The pedal you push to flush doesn't seem to be connected to the holding tank in any way. There is a rod coming down under the tank, and when I reach around and manually push up on it, water goes into the bowl, but that and the fact that there isn't any kind of float in the tank leaves me totally perplexed! Can anyone explain the workings of theses things? Am I missing parts? Is it worth messing w/ or shoulod I scrap it? It's kinda cool, and as I said doesn't seem to leak anywhere. Thanks!
