Thetford Slide-Ez toilet valve repair

Hello, Anyone know what the fitting on the top of my '66 AS toilet's gate valve does (see picture)? It appears to vent the black water tank into bowl of toilet?? I bought a seal kit #03827 that came with a new stainless steel plate that does not have this fitting. Looking around there is a different kit #09872 that shows a lip seal not attached to a ss plate. I wonder if and how this could be attached to my ss plate with a fitting.

Brain fart, duhh. Is this an overflow for the toilet? If it is can I plumb this somewhere else, say into the gray water or out on the ground?

Hi Brian,

Welcome to the forum. Your toilet does not have an overflow (other than onto the floor ). Once the black tank gets full, the toilet will not empty when the pedal is pushed.

I have a very similar SLIDE-EZ valve on my '67 Airstream, and it does not have the fitting pictured in the top, left-hand corner of your picture. The only thing I can think of is that, since your valve is mounted horizontally, the mystery port is a vent for moisture that gets trapped between the plastic & stainless parts of the valve. My valve is mounted vertically and serves to drain the black tank.

Not sure how it works, but I think it has something to do with adding water to the bowl when flushing the toilet. There is a clear tube that runs from this connector to the back side of the toilet. If you plan to flush the toilet using the hand sprayer, I would think you can plug both ends of the connection. Were did you get your rebuild kits?

Tom, What I mean by an overflow, is that if the water level in the bowl got too high for some reason(valve sticking on) it would run back to the tank around the gate valve. It seems to me that this would also let gasses out into the bathroom. I put water through the hose that connects to the toilet and it came out a hole in the back of the bowl. The only thing that it can be is an overflow.

This now seems to be the least of my problems. I was planning to patch the rotten floor under my toilet area and pulling out the soft wood revealed a crack in the black water tank. I took it out (not an easy job) and broke the vent pipe off the far corner of the tank, not that I could have fixed the first crack. Now I need to find a new tank. I don't enjoy camping this much.

Ya, I saw Andy's fiberglass tanks for $445. If mine were fiberglass it would be easy to repair, but it looks like vacuum formed plastic. Iv'e never done plastic welding before. I'll probably end up buying one, but have considered making one out of stainless. That would last forever.
