The Great Toilet Paper Debate

We have always used RV/marine toilet paper. Recently we have talked to several campers who told us that they have been using regular household toilet paper in their RVs with one of the new chemical toilet products. They claim that these products completely disolve the regular paper. They tols us that they have not experienced any problems.

We would appreciate feedback from the group.

Actually, We have used both and the only problem I can report was that once we thought our black tank was full (cause it LOOKED full) but it was the regular paper sort of plugged up in the hole. We got pumped at the event and still the paper was there so we thought it was still somehow full. We got pumped again and I quickly figured out what the problem was.
The RV paper seems to stick to the sides and not flush completely. It's a give and take thing...

Scott Tissue TP is safe for RV holding tanks. We have used it for years with no problems. No Sh**

I bought one roll of the RV/Marine stuff. That was it. I have been using Scott 1000 sheets, the thin stuff, which is septic safe.. Lots of paper has been through my tank.

We've been using Scotts, too. No problems. Be sure and get the original, and not the "extra soft". It's too thick.

I've never concerned myself too much about it - never had any problems whatsoever. Everything breaks down nicely if that's not too descriptive.
Maybe it's our diet of mexican food....

Unique Digest It appears to make a thin slurry out of the contents in short order. Will not explain how I know that.

Single ply Scotts has always worked for me with no problems. The only difference I see between the RV/marine paper and Scotts is the price - you pay more for the *special* RV paper.

Angel soft toilet paper.They even make them for RV's.IT will say it on the package.I had a blowout one time when trying to dump the tank at the first Can Opener and I can seriously say that it was desolved to liquid.Luckily not a lot came out but eeuuuuwwwwweeeeee.

We use single ply (Scotts) No issues, low cost!

We use Scotts Paper. I look at the RV stuff as a complete rip off. Cost twice as much and is twice as rough.

We may not use our camper as much as many of you. I like to leave about 2 gallons in the black tank and some chemicals while sitting in the yard. Gets plenty of time to desolve stuff.

As I understand it, any single ply should do the trick. No need to pay more for rolls that say RV on them.

The stuff I get is used for the home but it just says in small print that it is rv safe.Nothing more than that.

Why flush good greenbacks down the drain. Use the cheap stuff, poke your finger thru a few times----

I just got off the phone with a person from Charmin and they told me that they have done testing with the charmin basic and it can be used in the black tanks with no problems in all RV's.They told me not to use the other ones they sell because they have not tested them yet.

Right now I have swithed to scott's but if I think I will be trying the Charmins once I run out of these.

Three Rivettes standing around my unit... watching a demonstration of the "Sewer Solution" which is a one inch dump hose with a water pressure "mascerator". One remarks, "Gee standing around watching someone else's poo drain... I feel like we're Hank Hill and his buddies standing in the alley..." The other two respond, "yep" and "yep". Then I remark, "you know seriously most of what I learned about propane safety came from Hank Hill..." responses of "yep" and "yep" yet again.

Long story short, I've come to the conclusion that (A) sanitizing your black tank is an oxymoron because you're only one tinkle away from messing it up again and when traveling I would use my own facilities in preference to any public pissoire and (B) agitation is more effective that washers, wands, backflowing clear water in through a connector nozzle, etc. I get my tank as empty and clean as is practical in a reasonable amount of time, then I dump in 3 or 4 gallons of clear water and TRAVEL. At the END of the journey I empty the black tank again.

I've once flushed my tank for 30 minutes (something came up and I got stuck on the cell phone). When I arrived at my next destination three hours later I opened the valve for the black tank and some brownish liquid still came out. If I didn't fulltime, at the end of the season I'd put 5 gallons of clear water and a couple of cups of Clorox in it, then drive and dump, then repeat with clear water and drain thoroughly. As long as I'm actively using it, I'll dump, partly fill, drive and dump again. Can you say "scrubbing bubbles?"

We use charmin. I am careful to flush the tanks with a wand on the end of the hose often. I also periodically fill the black tank to about 1/3, and add laundry detergent just before leaving on a trip. This seems to slosh and clean the tank enroute. I then dump before camping. This keeps things clean, and helps minmize ordors.
