Picture? Sounds like it might be a water filter. That would be pretty obvious though with tubing going to a spout at the sink.

It looks like it has only one connection so I would say it's a water pressure accumulator. Good accessory in the water system, replace it. The new one I put in our Airstream is a plastic assembly, works very well.

Water filter, what is leaking on it? Fyi if the cartridge in it is not changed from time to time(12mo) then it becomes more of a health hazard than benifit. The hose repair on the copper has my attention as well.

If that's from a '71 Excella, I hope it's someone's repair job.
If it left the factory with that level of craftsmanship, they must be beating the workers like on a Greek galley ship.

45 years later I think it looks pretty good, could use some updating now though.
