I own a '69, and I believe all the early 70s models share the basic accoutrements. There is nothing special about the "phone" shower head: a plastic spray handle with a simple push-button on/off valve. Mine is attached directly to the top of the sink faucet, others with a dedicated shower are attached either to the shower faucet or to the spigot that runs to the faucet. The shower head does not contain any controls other than the on/off valve, water pressure and mixture are controlled at the faucet itself.
Many have replaced the original shower head with third party upgrades. I like the Oxygenics BodySpa, which claims to provide a higher pressure stream whilst conserving water. The cutoff valve it comes with does not completely stop the flow, however. This, according to them, is a feature, not a bug, to prevent you from scolding yourself when you resume the flow. I just shut off the water at the faucet when I want to pause the flow, as I have adjusted the hot water heater to provide the perfect temp when it is on solo.
A tip, any such faucets will benefit from periodic cleaning with Lime-away or CLR to clear out the build up of deposits.
