Shower door too low

On our 2022 Globetrotter 27 the shower door has dropped too low to get over the metal threshold without lifting the door a bit. What is the best way to fix? There does not seem to be any adjustment.

I believe there is another thread on this topic with solutions, it's a common problem.

Apparently, the sag can't be avoided. When we were at JC last year they "fixed" ours by putting a block of nylon or some material on the opening side threshold and bracing it on the hinge side as well. We hate it. It requires a tug upwards to get the shower door to close - not so simple when trying to take a shower. I think they said they install this on all newer trailers (ours is a 2023).

It might work better if we have them shave some off the block while we're in JC in April to fix a countertop that is the wrong size that they installed, but that's another story (holding back on a rant).

Ah the shim. Bit me too. You need to lift the door one more time and stuff a shim underneath at the pivot point. Its 5/8” x 1/2” x 3/8” high. Ive heard people cut up plastic cutting boards to size.

Yep, the nylon block/shim is apparently the "fix." A friend recently pointed this out in their newish trailer. Not sure of their model but it must be a common problem. Same as others have said, the friend had a block under the hinge side to hold the door up when pivoting open/close and a block on the handle side to keep the door straight when closed and from tilting/listing when traveling.

As with any Airstream issue the problem/solution are both Rivets (lol). Is a rivet at the top of the shower door loose or missing?

There is a shim, but also a screw that has to be replaced. The screw head gets sheered off eventually, and that causes the door to drop. "Thisairstreamlife" posted a video on how to fix it on Instagram a while back. When we were at the factory in the Spring, they had the shims and screws for sale for cheap.

If a sag in the shower can't be avoided, I wonder why mine still close like it should after 6 years of ownership? Does the sag happen because the shower door opens during travel?

(NOT SAG... Just clearance, in my case.)

I cut a small piece of aluminum sheet I had in the garage, just wide and long enough to slide under the Door Frame hinge at the Bottom. (2019 27FBQ)

Had Nancy hold the Shower Door UP as far as it would move. A small fraction of an Inch. Maybe half, or less, the thickness of a Cent.

Slide, or force a bit, the slice of Aluminum between the shower frame and door hinge. If raised the door enough to easily open and close, job done.

Still there after years. Cost less than one cent.

Each door may vary a fraction. Have someone grasp at the bottom of the door and lift. How much clearance do you have at the bottom hinge? That is YOUR gap to fill... with something to fit into that space.

You may want a cement glue to hold the shim secure... although I did not.

Find something laying around in the garage that you can use to cut to size, slide under the door frame. If it is SNUG... have the help reduce the upward pressure. The movement is just enough to shim and create the little clearance needed.

Test the door swinging open and close. Make SURE the door locking mechanism is secure. Otherwise you will create a real problem replacing your glass door and frame. One action can create another not expected.

If it did not clear... and still have a bit of play... find something else to slip under the door hinge.

Cost less than one cent. Your fiddling around is easy or difficult depending if you are a 'hands on' person, or need someone to help, who is. Took more time to find a piece of metal around my work bench.

When done, open and close the shower door. Have a beer, while making sure it works.

Welcome to the "shower door shuffle"! As pointed out by others above, AS now installs a nylon shim under the hinge side and also under the front of the door below the shower door. Many of us have had this, as you can see. I called AS last year and they sent me the shim. Wife cleaned the lower door frame and glued on, so the rear hinge side of the door, rests on this, and front also rests when closed. Works well.

First time this happened on my "new" 2012 25' FCT AS, I called them up and told them the door was on the floor after a trip. That was similar issue, but the upper "hinge screw" had broken off in the upper aluminum door frame. Instead of sending me a new screw, they sent me a whole new door with frame! I didn't want to go thru total door replacement with frame, so I just unscrewed the new longer hinge screw and was able to get the old screw thread out of the extruded aluminum and replace with new screw. With our 28' we had similar issue, which the spacers AS sent me last year for the bottom door tray, have fixed the issue.

Permanent fix

I went the same route with the nylon blocks. They didn’t last. I completely rebuilt my shower door with parts from the manufacturer. The fix didn’t last. I made custom nylon blocks from a nylon cutting board. That didn’t work. What did work was removing the three screws on the inside of the jam, raising it about half an inch , drilling some pilot holes and re-inserting the screws. This has worked perfectly for months.

Yes that's the solution, but the weight of the glass does pull the door down over time, so before hitting the road I slip a little wedge (made from a wooden clothes pin) on the other side of the door to support the weight of the door while traveling and remove it when we set up camp. So far it works and the door swings like new, time after time.

This problem is as iconic as the Airstream itself! Dealing with it is a kind of Airstream initiation challenge.

If you have the glass door and travel much at all, that door is doomed to fail. It is just too much weight to be banging up and down in a trailer. Bought our trailer in 2016, we are second owners. We replaced the thin plastic sweep at the bottom multiple times then realized the door was cutting it off, finally just removed the last sweep and did not replace it. JC "fixed" our door by putting the plastic block in, Colonial in NJ rebuilt the door when the adhesive failed and the glass started falling out of the frame, lucky no broken glass, and put better plastic blocks in. In 2023 back to JC because the door has dropped down in spite of the block and we had to lift it up several inches to open-close it. Service center said "sorry the door is shot, can't fix it, and a new one will be $1,000, installed." We mentioned friends who have a Flying Cloud 26U RB model who have a retractable shower door that was original equipment when they bought their Airstream. Service center said "sorry, we can't do custom work." We told them to remove the door and frame. We went down the street to the dollar store and bought a cheep shower curtain and stuck some Command hooks temporarily in the shower to hold the curtain. We measured the opening and ordered a Nautilus retractable shower door per the thorough online instructions direct from Stoett Industries. Made in Ohio, choice of door pattern (we picked the stripe,) choice of trim color (we picked brushed nickel) and installed it ourselves. Only weighs about 8 lbs. $295 including shipping to Michigan. We're not expert repair people but anyone with average skills can to do it. Love it. We would never go back to a glass door. Good luck.

I looked at that solution when I was having trouble with my door, for the third time, until JC sent me the blocks for the bottom of the door. Works fine since I installed the blocks last year. We leave the water sweep off also, as it is a pain, and really water on the floor is not an issue with it off. Can you take a picture of your new retractable door? Also, did you have any issues removing the old shower door and frame? I have heard that the door frame connected to the shower wall adhesive is a real bear to take off?

I made a shim out of a piece of plastic cutting board. I cut a groove on the bottom of it to accept the ridge on the aluminum frame, which holds it in place.
Sorry for the rotated photo.

We experienced the shower door sag. After chasing it with increasingly higher shims I realized the frame for the glass was separating at the top. It is a crappy design all the way around, and by design unrepairable for the long term. And yet, AS continues to use the same design door in almost all models. Go figure.

Finally, I ripped it from the door Frame and replaced it with a Nautilus retractable door from Stoett.. $225 from Amazon and a 1.5 hour install. Lighter weight, easy to clean. 6 pack DIY project.

Word of caution: don't get clever with the install, like I did. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!

Take Advantage of the Situation

We have not fixed ours. It is very easy to lift the door when using it and the drop provides some backup to keep the door from swinging open when traveling, should the latch be overlooked.

Airstream Part # 204280 block

This is the part I bought to fix the shower door from being too low. (woodlandairstreamparts.com/products/airstream-spacer-block-for-shower-door-204280?srsltid=AfmBOorCIpdjLX2sCq2TJXCaDkpHbW4_ ). I had to pry up on the on hinge side of the door and tighten the door end screws too.

Gypsydad: In researching the door change we saw comments about how hard it was to remove the old door so we didn't attempt it. We were at the factory so we had them remove the old door. The only thing we did differently when we installed it was the directions said to silicone caulk on the outside of the door. This made no sense to us. We caulked on the inside.

Nylon block will fix it.
We also use a shower curtain.
You will be glad you did.
