our 65 Caravel needs toilet - What will work?
Our 1965 Caravel came with no toilet. Looking for recommendations on which one will fit? There is this odd slanted fiberglass piece that goes right up to the toilet flange so a wide based toilet wont work and I don't wish to cut into the fiberglass to make one work.
What have others used when it was time to replace their toilet on this little beauty of a camper?

You can see that the diagonal piece goes all the way to the hole.

This picture shows what the original toilet should look like in a '65 Caravel....
We have a different trailer, but we used a Sealand Dometic 320 Low Profile because our toilet is on a platform similar to yours. It has a pretty small base compared to most - but it might still be too big for your condition. Ours does have a removable plastic cover at the base that you may opt not to install to keep the base smaller. Here is a picture of ours when we were dry-fitting it that shows (sort of) the base without the cover installed.
Here is a link to the Dometic website which gives dimensions of all their models. The 301 model looks like it has a dimension of 13" at the flange....it might work, depending on the dimension from the center of your hole to the angled part and if too has an option cover at the base.
You may also consider looking at some of the marine toilets out there - there's a lot of crossover between RV's & boats. Another option would be trying to source a "donor" trailer owner that would sell you their old one....but that may come with a whole host of other issues!
Good luck!
Shari

Hello from Colorado and welcome to AirForums. The pictures explain what constraints you have. InsideOut presented some good possible solutions.
I don't have any solutions, and I don't know whether you are restoring to like it left the factory, or renovating with some modifications. I always regretted installing a shower in my 66 Trade Wind. At 24' I always thought of it as a nice trailer for a week out, but not an extended stay trailer. I moved the toilet forward and inside the frame rails so I could put a bigger tank under it.
See photo.
You have a wet bath in front of the big rear window. The sink and shower need a grey tank or a blue boy. So what if you built your own bath to fit the toilet you want under the tank you want? I've read about some pretty neat bath layouts here on these Forums. The solution may be to start fresh.

Original 1966 Caravel Toilet
Hello. I am restoring my 1966 Caravel 17 and have the same shower pan and black tank constraints as shown in these photos. I have the original toilet, which was working when I started the restoration. Private message me if you would like to have it, and we can decide how best to make that happen.

Right now we are just looking to have a working toilet, as our camper did not come with one at all. If I aim just right I can use the hole in the floor but the little woman isnt happy about it!!!

You might remind her that your Airstream came with a "wet" bath.
I understand your desires. Hopefully you will find an original toilet that works. The one I took out of my 66 Trade Wind was a real clap trap. I wonder if the 65s had the same contraption. It was leaking and rotted out the subfloor. I built a new bath for that trailer. A Trade Wind is 24' long. I think your Caravel is 16' long. Big difference. My son has a 69 Globetrotter with a wet bath. Not my favorite layout, but space efficient.

In my 67 Caravel i used a dometic 320 i believe.. Elongated with porcelain bowl & sprayer.
I did put in a new tank & base and moved the drain hole a bit..
Just check all measurements on Dometics website.
I made a template of the toilet base and stick out of bowl front to back & side to side to put on top of the black tank to double check fit before buying the toilet.
Good luck with your project.

All you need to do is get a tall slim base. Thetford RV Camper Residence High Profile Toilet White Foot Flush 42169 42161.."LOOKS" to be similar in size at the base...I'll measure mine and get back later

Go right to their website..Dometic or Thetford. They have drawings with all the specs on them..
Make a template from the drawings & you will be able to see what will fit.
They will have dimensions to go with the drawings..
Hope this helps.

I did not change the toilet area much on my 67 Caravel.. You should not have an issue with fitment.

Mine is low profile too.. Because it sits up on the black tank.
