Is the shower supposed to work or is it just for looks?

I am trying to get all the issues sorted out on my 81 Excella II with the center bath. The shower does not work. It appears that the shaft is frozen and has resulted in a broken knob.

First of all how is the thing suppose to work. I assume right to left is temperature control and in and out is flow? How do I get this thing apart?

Also is the drain a standard shower drain that can be replaced? Mine looks pretty sad.

The shower valve is a Moen. In and out regulates flow, and left and right regulates temperature. In order to remove the valve:
Remove the center cap in the knob
unscrew the philips screw in the center, and remove the knob
slide the sleeve off the cartridge cover
unscrew the escutcheon around the valve
remove the copper C clip from the valve
Grip the cartridge with a pair of pliers, and pull it out. You may need to use the tool supplied with the new cartridge to break it free.
Installation is the reverse of removal. If the hot and cold are reversed, simply remove the knob, and rotate the center of the cartridge 180 degrees.

Are knobs available at Lowe's or similar places? I guess they would have a cartridge as well? Do you have any idea where to get a shower curtain. It looks like a special deal with velcro on both sides.

Thanks for the info

Yeah, Moen parts are readily available at Lowe's, Home Depot, and many larger hardware stores. We have several Moen single-control faucets at home and cartridges are cheap enough I keep a spare on hand.
