HELP!!! Tub Drain broke

We are in need of so serious help removing the tub from the rear bath of our 1976' 31' Sovereign. We need to repair some plumbing under the tub.

We bought an expensive tool that fits in the drain and accepts a socket wrench. We sprayed the drain with wd40, let it sit for a couple of days in hopes of making the removal easier.

BIG PROBLEM! When we tried to remove the drain (chrome ring with a + in the bottom) it broke! It now spins but is not loose. Now what!? We are in the middle of a remodel and have all the walls out so I guess that's a plus but how the freak do you remove the darn thing NOW!?

We hope to have all the waterline repairs finished this weekend so any help would be great.

Thank you in advance

Kani and Jack

If your drain is just spinning and not coming out ,I would guess the shoe has broken off from the pipe, therefore the tub should come right out.If you plan on reinstalling you will need a Lift and turn drain,it should come with drain and flange. If you get the tub out with drain still in it a sawzall should take care of removing from tub.Good luck.Dave

if the tub doesn't come out the drain might be stripped in the shoe. You might have to saw the drain pipe behind the wall so you can have access to remove the tub. Then deal with removing the drain when tub is out.I'm fixing to be doing the same thing with mine.

Question on detail of tub drain problem ...

Hi Kani and Jack -- a question,

When you turn the wrench, does the top ring of the drain turn with the wrench?

If you have a Dremel tool you could use a cut off wheel (probably 4 or 5) to cut through the collar about 1/4" below the top flange. Once the flange is off you can lift out the tub.

Another option

I am not sure if you can do this on your '76, but on our '74 I could reach through the access door in the back and get to the tub drain trap. If you can get a spanner wrench, or large pair of channel locks on the nut on the outflow side of the trap, then you may be able to loosen the nut completely and turn the trap enough to get the tub out.

If you don't have a big enough wrench, then try to loosen it by hand. Since everything is plastic, it might not be tightened down too hard.
Good luck.

We got it out!

The tub is out! We had to cut the drain collar into quarters and pry it out but it worked! The tub wasn't glued to the tub support so it came right out.

The break in the water pipe is not behind the tub but coming out of the shower hot/cold line which is a matha to get to.

I took pictures and will post later on how we fixed the problem.

Thank you all again for your help.
