Can one remove the lower fiberglass shower unit in a 1965 Caravel without removal of the interior walls, my Caravel was built at Jackson Center and has the wider door opening.........thanks

Hi Toastie, I'm going to guess no. I've never seen one removed without removing the rest of the interior first. If it's any consolation, removing the rest of the interior isn't really that difficult. I pulled out my interior but left the bathroom alone when I did my floor repair. That bathroom 'shell' appears to go all the way around, even behind the closets, at least in my 68. I don't think it could be removed without pulling those out first.

It may be able to be removed without gutting the entire interior, but not in one piece. They were typically built from the rear forward so the fiberglass shower went in first and the walls and rest of furniture built around it. If the shower is in good shape, it would be a shame to have to break it up in a million pieces to remove it when somebody may want it for their trailer...

The furniture in these old tralers comes out really easy...we took both of ours apart (different times) in less than a weekend each.

How do I get the bathroom shell out of my 1965 Caravel? Do I put it on its side? At what angle does it fit through the door?

Remove everything first then you should be able to get it out the front door I have a 1966 caravelle so I know the layout pretty well if you have any questions or any other thing let me know

Ouch..I did the measurements..not getting out the door.. door is less that 30 inches.. shell off my friend.. if you turn it on his side or straight out it won't work you need 30 inches of clearance

You cant without removing to shell.. according to my calculations. We have the same layout. Im 98% sure that you can not get it out with the shell on. The Door is too small. It is under 30 in. The shower is 30 in high on the bath sink and 30 in wide..

I removed mine from my '68 Caravel getting ready for a frame off. It will come out, you just need the right helper. I don't remember if we put the sink side out the door first or the toilet side, but it will not be a problem. You have to have the bulkheads out on both sides, but I didn't take the water heater out, before the uninstall.

Toastie and Viewfinder...this CAN be done...at least it worked in my 1966 Caravel 17'. Did it yesterday, in fact. I tried to snap some photos for you of the work in progress but honestly, the job is all hands on. The pieces do flex, so you have to be mindful of the edges, as you bring them in and out. But as AS restoration tasks go, this one went quite smoothly. You have to have two people, and essentially slowly snake them around the front side of the doorway, following the curve of the surround.

Note that the lower piece has a brace that was installed under the sink. That was not done when the surround was removed for the shell-off, and the faucet was left in place, dangling with no support, causing the corner to rip.

I attached a photo of the upper surround sitting outside of the trailer on a wooden brace...just so you would know the pieces actually were outside!

I should add, Toastie, that you can leave all the panels in place, except those which abut the shower surround sections - i.e., the shower surround sections continue into, and cover, the back of the closets.
