Why does my hot water heater propane make this noise?

So, the propane on my hot water heater is sounding strange lately. Any idea what is causing it, and how to fix it?

It kinda sputters, Iím wondering if thereís some buildup that needs to be cleaned, but Iím not sure how to even get in there if My theory is correct.

Hereís a video of it (easier than trying to describe)

Check inside the flue for small bugs or bug nests. I had some in mine a couple of years ago, They prevented the air and propane from properly mixing causing that sputtering sound and sending out a lot of black smoke.

It could be the air/fuel mixture. There is a sliding collar with oblong holes on the tube that the propane jets into. Loosen the screw and slide the collar back and forth while the burner is running until it sounds smooth, then tighten the screw.

Yes I believe this is an fuel/airflow issue. Remove and clean the small air/fuel mixing tube with a small wire brush and you should be good.

Why does my hot water heater propane make this noise?

Just to the left of the air shutter is the propane orifice. My .02$ remove air shutter, then remove the orifice and look for a small piece of debris that is flopping around and randomly interfering with propane flow.

Iíve found dried pipe dope and bug larvae in propane orifice.

Sputtering or gurgling is usually too much air.
As noted above move the collar to reduce the opening. You should see just the tiniest tip of yellow in the flame and the noise should be smooth and steady

Yes. But I just copied it and pasted into Safari and it went right to the YouTube video.

This from the Atwood service brochure...

- Low gas pressure
- Poor gas supply
- Improper air adjustment (as mentioned above)
- Poor main burner alignment
- Misaligned burner flame spreader
- Blocked burner orifice (clean it and DO NOT enlarge it)
- Obstructed main burner
- Obstructed "U" tube (as mentioned before)
- Obstructed exhaust grille

Thx!

Thanks everyone, this solved the problem: take the unit apart and clean out any debris (there was a fine dust in the large pipe).

Reassemble and everything was quiet once again.
