Water pump

I've a 2019 22' Sport, bought brand new from the dealer. It has a Shur-flo water pump. Looking through the Shur-flo booklet that came with the rig, I see Shut-flo says to NEVER connect the pump directly with PEX lines or other stiff plumbing; doing so will result in excessive vibration that over time will crack connections, as well as create lots of noise. Which there is. So what do you think of Airstream building these rigs without following the installation directions recommended by the component manufacturers?

That’s Airstream over the last 25 years for ya. Build it fast, build it cheap, craftsmanship be damned.

Or so it seems….

The absorption refrigerators on models without roof vents are another example. Airstream did not follow manufacturer specs for clearances and air flow that are spelled out in the installation instructions. Then tried to fix the lack of proper convective air flow with a computer fan.

Dandy,

Welcome to the club. I have owned two "vintage" units and have not been impressed with various "design/engineering" aspects. Airstream has a (unearned in my opinion) reputation as a high quality manufacturer; in reality they are mearly an expensive towable status symbol. Unfortunately, in the world of RVing there does not seem to be a really good alternative. (I have no experience with large and very expensive MotorHomes, at 500k plus you would hope things would be better.)

I have discovered that owning an Airstream is a good excuse to acquire repair skills and new tools. And vintage units offer a lower cost entry point - with the inevitable dents being much less painful. The newer "computer controlled" models really scare me - I have enough frustration in that department with the one sitting on my desk.

Anyway, my 1975 Trade Wind had the water pump mounted on/near the heat duct to the front. I replaced it with a Shur Flo (mounted according to factory instructions with suggested parts) - MUCH quieterer.

Enjoy the journey and have fun.

Not really to your point, but if your pump bothers you, you can get a controller which makes the pump run at partial speeds instead of pulsing full on and full off.
