Here is a recent thread. Post #2 has some links on the issue of tankless.

Rv 500

PrecisionTemp makes an RV approved tankless water heater, the RV 500. PrecisionTemp.com: For Recreational Vehicles and Boats

I installed one in my 1976 Sovereign in 2007 and have been very happy with it. It will fit in the same opening that your old water heater was in. Here are some pictures that I put together during this project.

i replaced the not working water heater with the precision temp rv500 in our 61 bambi. had to make the opening a bit bigger since the old was 6 gal. i think the rv 500 requires the same opening as a 10 gal.
very pleased with it. it's quiet and works fast providing hot water.
folks at precision temp -at my request- special ordered their brushed aluminum cover without the brushed part-- i.e.raw aluminum cover which i think will polish up quite nicely and hopefully match the cherished alclad 2024t3 aluminum used in vintage airstreams. nothing better then a long hot shower/cold beer/outside while camping. esp along the outer banks.

i need to get an outside shower control for use on our 16footer.

rv500 does require a clean 12volt source. the electrics need to be real good and up to date.

our '61 bambi is standing tall
