Water heater wont light

Great drive yesterday to go camping. No issues for the 5 hour trek. However, woke up this morning and the water heater wont start up. Never had any issues from it before. Gas works on other appliances.

Whats the first thing I should look for in troubleshooting this?

thanks!

Aaron,

Knowing the model number can help narrow down the SWAG's.

If Atwood and assuming DSI direct spark ignition if you open the door and listen and watch while someone turns on gas operation. Do you hear the ignitor clicking? Do you smell gas?

Have a multimeter?

Gary

Oh! I spoke too soon. After trying it several times and not working, I just gave it some time. After about 5 mins I tried again and it worked!

I had just turned the gas on and maybe it needed time to purge.

That's the best kind of problems. Those that fix themselves!

I always purge my system at the range top, While holding a extended propane BBQ lighter, therefore you are actually able to see the air escape and the blue flame ignite; good idea to leave the door open to avoid any gas buildup.. If you are boon docking; check the status of your battery; igniters work from 12V.

If you having trouble getting the igniter to light. Turn everything on and use a wand propane lighter. It is safe because the heat sensor will do the samething, turn off the gas if heat for a few seconds is not detected.
