Water heater relief valve location

I just took possession of my "new-used" International 25FB and suffered the leaking relief valve issue. I have read most of the threads on that and seem to have licked the problem for now.
But doesn't it strike anyone as odd that the relief valve discharges right into the compartment above wiring and controls? I put an elbow and a hose to at least direct any drips or flow to the bottom of that compartment. Is this standard on all Airstreams? I had two different Atwoods over twenty years on my boat and never had the problem, but they were not propane/electric and that relief discharged right to the bilge.
