Water heater mixing valve

There are numerous threads on the hot water heater mixing valve but here is my experience.

I had hot water in tank but it was not getting out of the tank. I have 2015 AS 28’ International.

The mixing valve is at the outlet of the water heater. I released water pressure and drained the water heater.

I removed two cold water hoses from mixing valve. At this point mixing valve can be removed from tank.

Examining the valve, I found a small cheap plastic poppet valve inside the check valve at the outlet of the mixing valve where hot water is supposed to flow from the tank. The poppet shaft had slipped out of the plastic guide and was not moving as it should. I was able to disassemble and reassemble the check valve, then reassemble onto the mixing valve.

After reinstalling the valve on the tank and reattaching the hoses, the hot water flowed freely from the tank. I couldn't tell why the check valve guts got misaligned (other than being cheap a$$ plastic) - so it may stay fixed and may not.

Golfman,
Who knows? I've dissected the @#$% thing as well. For your future edification here is a link to the valve in case you decide to carry a spare...I do (grumble).

I had a mixing valve problem after 2 years. They have a tendency to get sediment on the sensor and not work. One good thing is if you soak them in white vinegar that takes care of the sediment. Obviously your situation is different. I bought another new one and installed it and kept the old one as a back up. This seems to be a common practice. If I were you I would do the same, because about the time you need it your really need it. I also decided to get a water softener and a high quality filter to use to try and limit sediment issues.
