Water Heater faults frequently

My water heater faults frequently:

On propane: The heater turns on fine, heats the water and cycles through once or twice, then faults.

On electric: It either faults immediately or after 30 minutes of operation.

Both scenarios get us warm showers in the morning, but I can't help but want to fix the problem.

New circuit board?

Thanks for any help.

Dave

Dave,

Is this a common tank type or some other type water heater? Model info can verify.

If a tank type care to try disconnecting the harness to board and very lightly clean the board terminals maybe use a pencil eraser and try again.

Gary - it’s a Dometic 6 gallon. Thanks for the suggestion. I will give it a shot.

Our 2021 Gt23 water heater cold to barely warm water. So I replaced the igniter board with a elephant circuit board. But that didn't fix the problem. Water temp would vary from 120 deg to 90 deg. So I took the mixing valve off. The fine mesh screen was covered with a white residue. So we purchased an a new mixing valve. Its been to cold to fill the water system to make sure that its fixed. I cleaned the old mixing valve with apple cider vinegar and will put it in our spares totes.

Dave, we had a 2018 FC23FB and the water heater faulted on gas but worked on electric. Turns out this is a common problem and Atwood updated the board to a new design (I think Atwood is owned by Dometic now).

Check to see if you have the old or new board. Any chance you’re within the 3 year factory warranty? If so, contact the dealer or Jackson Center. They may just send you the part.

Good luck!
-Jeff

In your AS owners manual pack, do you have one for the Dometic unit? This is a Dometic water heater manual but doesn't have troubleshooting. But they show that if you go to Dometic website you can access further info. https://www.dometic.com/assets/43/37/93755_64337.pdf

I have replaced my circuit board with the Dinosaur UIB 64. Looks cooler, but no change in operation.

I get plenty of hot water when I need it, and we do not run our water heater continuously, but I would like to find the problem.

Any other suggestions??

Thanks again,

Dave

I'd be looking at the ECO and actual T-stat both are on the outside of the tank. The ECO Emergency Cut Off is a Captain she's gonna blow! preventer. If its open when it shouldn't be it's like the plug has been pulled gas or electric. The T-stat is just that a T-stat.

Do you have a multimeter? And tackle one heat source at a time, I'd look at getting the gas side going because its easy to see/hear the flame.
