On Demand Electric hot water heater?

I'm currently boon docking my 77 Airstream Sovereign, I recently re-did the plumbing with pex. There is a rupture on the hot water tank, so i had to bypass it.

I'm about to get 120V power on the property, and i was thinking that i could just pick up a cheap on demand hot water heater like this one and place it inline for hot water. Has anyone done something similar ?

Do you still have the stock 30 amp service? If you do that heater will use 3500 watts of the max (for a limited time) 3600 watts of that 30 amps.

Are you ok with very limited hot water? That water heater says only a 35 degree temperature rise with a flow rate of 0.66 gallons per minute. I suppose if you only want it for washing hands it might be good enough to make the water not feel cold.

I would pass, too much curent draw for your trailer. A tanked propane and electric unit might be a better option.

If you're leaving the trailer permanently docked to shore power then an electric-only water heater is a possibility. But if this situation is only temporary then just replace the water heater with another propane unit and leave open the option of camping dry camping elsewhere when you don't have shore power.

It's not cheap, but the Truma Combi Eco I have in my restored AS is fabulous.

Mine is the propane only model, but the Combi Eco Plus can also run on electric.

Biggest pain in the US is that Truma doesn't want to sell to individuals. But I believe you can order them through Airstream, as they use the Combi Eco Plus in the basecamp:

Check with A&P Vintage Trailer Works in Paradise, TX. I was their first customer to install a Truma unit and have upgraded the controls recently. He also installed on on the other Airstream. Note that the Truma is smaller so serious metal work is involved to make for a professional installation.

Reviews for the unit you reference are not very favorable and I agree with others that it would draw too much current, even if it is always hooked to shore power. We like the Girard on-demand, tankless which uses propane and 12V DC. It burns propane only when a hot water valve is open.

Why not spend just a bit more for a Bosch non-instant? This one has a 4 gallon capacity and only draws 1,440 watts. Under most conditions you would have hot water in 25 to 30 minutes. It's a bit more ($200), but comes with a 6 year warranty as well. Takes up far less room than a traditional propane WH or combo WH.
