The hot water tank in my 2000 safari fails to shut off after water is heated up. By the time I recognized this the plastic drain plug had melted and was leaking. I was able to remove the plastic plug and replace. The rest of the trip I had to manually shut off after water was heated. I am planning on replacing the circuit board hoping this will take care of problem. Is there anyway of knowing for sure this needs done or if it could be another problem, such as thermostat or something else?
The thermostats are loosely held on place with plastic clips just enough to touch the wall of the tank
Have a look to see if they have been disturbed
If you are handy and have a test meter you can check whether the thrmostats are open or closed
Normally the lower temp stat will open when the tank reaches temp but the high level stat will remain closed. It only opens on over temp.
This will help decide whether a new board is needed, which I doubt since the thermostats cut power to the board

First thing to do is determine if its a suburban or an atwood. An atwood can be identified by a piece of black foam (outside) with ECO stenciled on it and 4 wires going into it. That is the likely cause of the issue/ There are high and low temp sensors that sit against the tank. The kit is about $35. I have never heard of your problem associated with it, usually the heater wont fire. Chances are that will fix it however.
