Help! Faucet water is black!

In our 89 excella, the cold water is suddenly colored black! At times it is so dark it looks like black paint! Could it be some kind of carbon? We have a water purifier w filter in the little side faucet on the sink in the galley, and it does not have any if the black tint. The black coloration is everywhere else, though-- kitchen and bath.is there some other "whole house" filter we haven't discovered somehow??? It seems to be just on the cold and it is heavier right when the water starts. We thought it was coming from the water hookup at another campground, but now we are having the same issue 100 miles away. Any ideas? Thank you!!!!

Is the dirty water just with city water connected? Or is the tank water dirty too? Did you test the tap water at the city water spigot before it goes into the trailer with a clear glass container? How'd that look?

Eastern South Dakota is very pretty with hills, rivers, and trees.

It sounds like a ruptured charcoal filter . Do you run your water through any external filters? If it is in the trailer itself it would likely show up only at one faucet

It sounds like the kitchen water filter may have ruptured. It is still preventing things from getting past it, but it is leaking (most likely carbon) into the supply to the other fixtures. Remove the cartridge and see if leaks black out of the input side.

Ahhh thank you! How can the little purifying filter, which is on only the little drinking water faucet, color all of the other taps?

Ah, but only the Shadow knows.

Seriously, that is the problem, the filter. I have been through this for over 40 years.

Before you replace the #150 cartridge, remove the filter, clean the container, reassemble the container, then run some water, from all the faucets, to clean out the water lines.

After the water runs clear, then replace the cartridge.

Welcome to Airstreaming, and some problems that don't have good answers.

Andy

Andy was right as usual. Thank you so much, Andy! We found a replacement filter both at Amazon.com and also at camping world. Astonishingly, it was cheaper at camping world!

That "150" filter cartridge, is becoming a rarety, as it's price keeps on climbing.

That "150" cartridge was used many years ago, and I am not aware that any RV company is using it today.

You can probably find them at a parts stocking dealer that is familiar with the old Airstreams.
