fixing a water heater 74 overlander

My husband took out our water heater and tested it, and it looks good, just loaded with "gunk" which he says he will try cleaning out. I think we just need to get the other stuff (sorry, but I'm computer literate, and not a mechanic) and it should be fine. Any ideas on cleaning out this aluminum tank? Any ideas on purchasing the mechanism for heating it? We have the service manual and it describes what part to purchase, so hopefully we will be able to find it somewhere. Thanks for any help.

I just replaced my water heater in my 66 trade wind. the pilot button was stuck, it hadn't been used in 4 yrs and it was really just a goner.

I had a local RV independant put in a 10 gallon Suburban with electronic start button inside. It is sweet. Just turn on your tanks and then push the button he installed and the unit fires up. Total cost all done was about $700 (parts was $500 of it). A bit more than I had budgeted but when I heard 10 gallons and instant start... it was worth it.

The new hot water heater sounds good, but I guess we are getting a used "thing"....the thing with the button, etc. That way we can use the aluminum door and all. If this doesn't work out, I've heard that Suburbans are the way to go, our local RV parts person says that a suburban would fit! Enjoy your luxuries! I may be having some cold showers if things don't go well.
