Berkey as Final Filter..

Hi,

My two stage full Airstream filter system (sediment and charcoal canisters) almost has the water to a point I can drink it. Yes I'm picky!

I considered an under sink with dedicated faucet but not keen on that.

So Berkey as a final filter to take the final edge off the city water??????

We bought a Travel Berkey for camping but like it so much we use it everyday. Cleans up the Cincinnati water real nice! Filters are expensive but last a long time. Well worth it!

We have one and it works great. Here's a picture of it when I tested it. Top chamber is water with food dye. Bottom is filtered water.

Do you use straight city water or pre filtered like I'm doing?

Their website is confusing...seems like they may have 2, 3 or 4 filter systems? Not sure if it has to do with volume or speed of filter etc...

I'd get the 1 gallon one so options probably limited...

At home we use straight city water into the Berkey. On the road the water is pre-filtered for sediment.

As I understand their system, the number of filters on the system is related to the production volume. The more people using the water the bigger the system required.

I love my Berkey! I had bottled water service for years at home. Canceled the service, bought a Berkey and saved tons of money and the water tastes great. It travels with me in the Airstream as well. I use it everywhere.

Looks like it will be hard to find a new one right now. All the sources I've looked at say back ordered. Anyone know of a source?

We bought the travel berkey about nine years ago for our Airstream. It fits nicely under the dinette bench when traveling. HOWEVER, we like it so much we use it at home and when we are traveling we purchase bottled distilled water for drinking, etc., and typically do not take the Berkey along.



We still have the awareness that in an emergency, one of the first things we would throw into the Airstream would be our berkey.



In our kitchen we do have a filter under the sink. We use cold tap water, that has come through this filter to supply our Berkey. All of our drinking water (at home), coffee water, etc. comes from the Berkey.


The Berkey represents a fantastic investment! If you are purchasing it make sure to get the spigot with a sight glass, otherwise you would have to lift off the top tank to see how much is in the bottom tank. This might be fun for a day or so, but after that, NO.

We also have a Berkey and use it in the AS. It's expensive but well worth it as compared to the expense of dealing with bottled water, not to mention the waste generated.

My son was looking for one for his home use and also could not find ion anywhere. Everything is back ordered. The demand is extremely high at the moment.

We have a travel Berkey which we use at home as well as when traveling. We added the optional fluoride-arsenic filter and it was especially useful during a stay at a location where there was a posted warning for arsenic levels in the water.

We purchased one for our AS also but bring it in the house when at home but really do not need it there we only do that because if you don’t use it for a week or so you have to re-prime the filters and that’s kind of a pain when you get somewhere to set up.

Berkey is great. We bought a Travel Berkey while in Kentucky for a time. Our west coast palette found the Kentucky water great for bourbon, but bad for drinking water. Found it so effective we got the Big Berkey. Fill it once a day and it provides all the drinking and cooking water we need. Using it at home when not traveling. No other filter needed for taste, although I do used a cheap charcoal filter on the end of the hose for sediment.

One "interesting" note on the Berkey filters: They need to be "charged" with water to get them running. You either keep them wet once you do that or pump water into them each time you start the system up again. Some people seem to have more trouble with this than others.

The number of filters and the size of the "tank" impact how fast you get water through the system. They have black filters that are carbon based / designed for everything. They also have filters that are aimed at halogens (?) (I've never used them ....).

With yours and elsewhere advice I took the chance and ordered a Travel Berkey 1.5 gallon 2 filter system last night on Amazon...and it arrived this afternoon!

Quite amazing! The local water is unpalatable and better but still not quite there with my dual stage charcoal/sediment full RV filter BUT Berkey as final filter is a 100% win! Good bottled water clean taste!

Took two tries to get primed but had a full gallon in no time. Tastes just great!

Solved the $1 or 25¢ a gallon store bought hassle.

We have used Berkey for over a year and agree that it is one of the best we have used.

We also struggled with priming the black filters. We ordered the Black Berkey Primer and it has made priming the filters easy.

We have the big Berkey and use it everyday. I clean the unit every 30 days and I re-prime the filters and it makes them perform(filter water faster) better. The primer is definitely worth the spend.

Once thing that helps over time is to take a brand new scrub pad to the filters every time you clean out the unit. I saw this in one of the care videos for Berkey and it really works. Our filters were starting to take longer to filter water and it looks like the scrub pad strips off a very minimal amount of the black filter material which get slightly plugged up over time. They work like new after that.

So our only issue with the Berkey is the space required to store and counter top space it takes up when out.

We’re in a TT 23FB and decided to go with a prefilter and UV purifier. The prefilter is only 5 μm and I recognize the Berkey filters down to .02 μm. That’s where the uv purifier comes in and destroys organic matter dna.

We received a 2gal Big Berkey for Christmas and love it! The only drawback in our situation is you're not supposed to use softened water-- which is our house water--so we have to bring a bucket in from the outside spigot. And yes, we purchased the must-have sight glass spigot-- worth every penny!

We decided to invest in a tiny camping Berkey for the Airstream. Small, but powerful (uses a full size filter and makes about 1-½ pints in about 15 mins), and we just fill a reservoir for coffee and drinking as it's convenient.

As a bonus, our tiny Berkey came with a padded carry case, priming pump and personal water bottle (with its own filter).
